To Market, To Market

Flowers spill onto paths, secondhand books and vintage bric-a-brac fill cluttered corners, and ground coffee beans abound—welcome to Marrickville Markets. Celiacs and vegans are well looked after, while meat eaters can be seen salivating over roasting lamb.

By 8:30am, The Addison Road Centre is teeming with people, eagerly stockpiling their eco-friendly baskets with beautiful, fresh ingredients in preparation for the coming week's meals. Conversation is easy, with friendly, informative merchants whose passion for produce is infectious. This enthusiasm quickly translates into a rather heavy basket and an almost empty purse. There's a certain pleasure in knowing the origins of our food; that Molly the chicken so kindly laid this morning's eggs.

With numerous farmers' markets popping up around town, it is clear Sydney-siders are craving a return to the grassroots' shopping experience. Here, sun replaces fluorescents, canvas trumps plastic, and people connect with one another rather than automatic scanners.  So, save your shopping for Sunday and make a morning of it! You won't be disappointed.
