World Gin Day (11th June) marks the “official” day to celebrate your appreciation for the juniper- based spirit. Of course, with a resurgence in the spirit’s popularity and the dramatic rise of craft gins, we know you don’t need an annual event to give you an excuse to enjoy a couple of extra G&Ts.
No longer known only for its medicinal benefits (yes, gin was once believed to prevent malaria), its versatility for making damn good cocktails is what has really placed our beloved drink back on the map. So here’s a list of Sydney’s best bars where you can pay homage to gin.
Moya’s Juniper Lounge
Influenced by a time when gin was king, Moya’s Juniper Lounge is a simply fitted out, sophisticated hole-in-the-wall bar in Redfern offering up a mix of both craft and traditional gins that bring to life their classic cocktail list. Their one request? ‘Don’t ask for vodka in your martini’. We get it.
With over 70 different types of gin on offer, Stillery’s love affair with the spirit is no secret. The bartenders are forever coming up with unique gin based cocktails (although we’ll never say no to a gin martini) and with more than a dozen tonics gracing the menu, Stillery is a G&T lover’s fantasy too.
Archie Rose Distilling Co.
As the old saying goes, ‘if it ain't broke, don’t fix it’, we are all guilty of being creatures of habit, particularly when it comes to trying new spirits. Archie Rose Distilling Co. offers gin sampling before you commit to ordering your drink of choice. Think of it like a wine tasting, but with gin. We’re sold.
The Powder Keg
Hidden in the backstreets of Sydney’s infamous Kings Cross, this converted terrace has adopted the small bar concept, yet remains the king of all things gin. With 110 gins to choose from, eight different tonic waters and even G&Ts on tap, The Powder Keg is the kind of place you go to for one and end up staying for more than you care to remember.
CBD and Barangaroo
Probably one of the coolest barbershops in Sydney, the appropriately named The Barbershop is also one awesome cocktail bar too. With a large selection of gin on the menu, you can get your hair did while downing some pretty delicious drinks. Now that’s livin’. Of course, you don’t need to be getting your hair chopped to enjoy the small bar.
