Blink and you might mistake it for one of the cute terraces Surry Hills is so renowned for, but that’s exactly the appeal of Chez Sun, a super-cute café and patisserie with a living room tucked away upstairs that we’d be quite happy moving in to.

After falling in love with the Surry Hills Café scene, owner Nelson Sun spent the best part of a year restoring this pretty terrace to its former glory, while adding a few modern touches that make the “living room” feel like the set of an interior design magazine. Heading here is like you’ve been invited round to a friend’s place, but that friend just happens to have impeccable taste (and be an amazing chef!).

Unlike most terrace houses, the upstairs space is bright and breezy, with a gorgeous balcony just begging for long lunches with plenty of cold pressed juices. For added #foodenvy, the gloriously fluffy hotcakes adorned with summer fruits will make you feel like you’ve finally kicked brunch FOMO forever. We’re 90% certain they’ve colour coordinated the fruit with the edible flowers for maximum Instagrammability. Extra points if you can get some of the balcony greenery in your shot.

The lunch menu is totally summer ready, with angel hair pasta that sits in a light and refreshingly cool gazpacho, topped with torched scampi and scallops. The seared tuna salad is also a good way to relieve yourself from the heat, especially with plenty of shaved fennel and watercress.

Dessert in Surry Hills

Just don’t go past the desserts downstairs (not that you could, because they’re pretty stunning). Whether you go for a failsafe like the hazelnut praline log, or something a little more special like the jasmine lychee mousse cake, every dessert is a showstopper here. Each season will see the release of a limited edition dessert too, which means we’ll be back for the midsummer berries dream. The heavenly strawberry mousse encases three different berry sauces, and is coated in a super delicate shell that’s far too much fun to break in to. Since Chez Sun use local produce (and even coffee), you can just just say you’re doing your bit to support the locals when you order a few more to take home for “later.”

Every weekend there’ll be seasonal specials, so now you have plenty of reasons to visit your new favourite hangout space on the reg.
