As if the inner west didn’t already have serious bragging rights for all round #winning at life, it now lays claim to Acre Eatery. This new Sydney restaurant has taken our city’s love affair with the farm-to-table concept up a delicious notch since opening its big, beautiful doors in July.
Set on 1,200 square metres of urban farm, with a market garden run by the green thumbs at Pocket City Farms and with Head Chef Gareth Howard leading the charge, you have officially found your next long lunch spot. Serving up wholesome, nutritious meals to up to 350 people at a time, you can bring all of your mates and your mates’ mates, it’s okay, just thank us later.
Whether it’s a starter of macadamia and cannellini hummus (yep, we were intrigued too and it definitely did not disappoint), a roast chicken that is up there with the best we have ever had, served on artichoke puree with cavolo nero, brussels sprouts and home-style gravy, or the roast pumpkin that’s perfect as a main, or a side dish for sharesies, with ricotta and hazelnut crumble. All pie lovers out there need to get the lamb shank and faro pie in your bellies stat, it’s warm and hearty like a good pie should be.
Acre Eatery is where you go to dine on sustainable and locally sourced produce and proteins. You’ll feel like you’re dining in a farmer’s home, which is exactly the vibe the team were going for. It has everything we love, natural light, beautiful fittings, an open kitchen so you can see (and smell) the action and wrap around windows that, come daylight savings, are going to make this our watering hole of choice as soon as those warm summer evenings kick in.
The bar area means you can come for a cheeky tipple, should the situation arise, and tuck in to a side of fat chips or perhaps the potted salmon with sourdough and pickled vegetables (from the garden of course), but also means that your Acre meals can be paired with some pretty impressive, not to mention, expertly made cocktails. We didn’t really know what to expect when we saw cucumber basil cooler on the menu and what we ended up with was the freshest tasting cocktail we’re yet to wrap our lips around, a refreshing combo of tequila, lime, agave, cucumber (shock) and basil (that’s a surprise), all finished with habanero bitters.
If you’re keen to keep things really casual, but still tasty, The Container located just as you enter plates up a quality take-away service with meals like organic salads and sandwiches, coffee and even wine so you can sip and stroll around the gardens as you convince yourself that you are, in fact, a green thumb at heart and could totally do this at home. The outdoor dining has its own al fresco bar menu with tasty treats like cauliflower fritti and homemade pickles as well as oxtail burgers, ensuring all tastes are catered for.
Acre Eatery and The Camperdown Commons are an ideal location to watch the world go by with every delicious thing you could need literally at your fingers. But just quietly between us, the added highlight when you come here is watching Michael Zagoridis from Pocket City Farms tending his garden beds with his pooch Pepe—talk about dog goals.
