Right now, one scroll through Instagram and it seems like everyone is sunning themselves on a beach in Europe. Fortunately, we’ve found the perfect place to banish your winter blues; a hidden gem of a retreat so special, one visit and you’ll be thinking Amalfi what?
While Byron Bay has exploded in recent years thanks to its gorgeous beaches and chilled out vibes, we reckon it’s time to explore the region’s stunning hinterland and to be specific, luxury hideaway Blackbird.
The boutique bed and breakfast, set on 28 acres, is the ultimate weekend getaway just 35 minutes from the heart of Byron Bay town and a one-hour drive from the Gold Coast. Owner James Hudson set out to create a private paradise that features touches of Palm Springs and Morocco whilst still paying homage to the Aussie landscape. They want this special spot to feel like your home away from home and they kick things off with complimentary cheeseboard, chocolates and champagne on arrival.
The sprawling property, beautifully framed in acres of lush rainforest, comprises of three private pavilions. Each is thoughtfully fitted out with the latest environmentally sustainable energy saving 20kW solar system as well as modern luxuries, designed to ensure you unwind and zen out. Think: Moroccan tiled bathrooms with naked copper fittings, king beds with Egyptian cotton linen on burnished concrete floors, reclaimed timber cabinetry, and warm birch ply panelled walls.
You’ll fall asleep under a canopy of stars and wake up to a truly breathtaking sunrise, all from the comfort of your bed. Proving they’ve truly thought of everything, you’ll find a bottle of red, chocolate and even a star gazing book at your disposal.
While it’s tough to leave your cosy retreat, you’ll want to head to the property’s hub, a giant reclaimed shed that’s been lovingly restored. Here you’ll be served a delicious, home-style brekky consisting of fresh local produce, fruit platter, and croissants every morning of your stay.
Next, it’s time to achieve peak holiday mode. Warm up in the sauna, before getting comfy in a day bed by the 10-metre mineral magnesium infinity pool where you can watch the mountains meet the sea. There’s wine in the fridge for purchase (or you’re welcome to bring your own) and speakers for you to play DJ with. If you really want to push the boat out (and you absolutely should) you can even enjoy a full body aromatherapy massage by the pool. With nothing in site but rainforest, Cape Byron and the Pacific Ocean, you’ll truly feel like a millionaire in your own private paradise.
Rather than driving into town for dinner, you can join Chef Martyn Ridings and Chef Catie Bain for a personal chef experience onsite—Martyn has worked in some of the most impressive fine dining restaurants in Australia, while Catie has worked throughout South East Asia alongside top chefs.
Together, the pair will curate, cook and serve guests poolside set to the backdrop of exquisite ocean views. Showcasing some of the best local produce the region has to offer, the pair have created an internationally inspired menu, designed to be social and home-style like you have never tasted. To avoid missing out, ensure you reserve a spot at the time of booking.
If you’re the kind of person who likes their holiday with a side of activities, we recommend taking a day trip to nearby Mullumbimby. The sweet little sister of Byron boasts amazing antique shops, a thriving café culture and a classic country pub—minus hordes of tourists. Plus, thriving restaurants like Trouble San and Saint Maries. If you want to work off your wine, there’s also the chance to go kayaking, mountain biking and hiking in Blackbird’s surroundings. You might even spot a pair of baby goats going for a walk with the neighbour’s dogs. Yep, this place is all kinds of special.
But perhaps the best part of Blackbird are the people behind it. The Hudsons are always on hand to ensure your stay is pure bliss. From food recommendations to the best walking tracks and everything in between, Blackbird has all the warm fuzzy feels of a classic bed and breakfast with the luxury touches of a swanky hotel.
