The silly season brings with it many things: Kris Kringle pressies that’ll likely be regifted next year, boozed up relatives and that awkward, annual decision of which side of the family you’ll be spending Christmas day with. It’s not all festive faux pas, though—one such thing that’s universally loved this time of the year are Christmas markets.

And wouldn’t you know it, the state of Victoria is pretty good at them. It’s still early days, though several have already been announced in the city and further afield. Here are the best Christmas Markets in Melbourne and Victoria.

String Bean Alley Christmas Night Market

Melbourne

A hot contender for one of the city’s best Christmas markets is the String Bean Alley Christmas Night Market hosted in one of the open-air thoroughfares at Queen Victoria Market. Brick Lane’s bar will have all your booze sorted while there’ll be plenty of local artisans of all varieties selling their truly unique to-be pressies. This market comes with all the bells and whistles, too, like a mammoth Gingerbread person doing the rounds and fake snow to really double down on the theme.

Bay Street Christmas Market

Port Melbourne

The Christmas Spirit is strong in this one. No doubt one of the city’s favourite—and best—Christmas Markets is returning for cheery ol’ time this December. As always, it’s backed by Rotary and City of Port Phillip who always put community front of mind, and after the year or so that’s been, they’ll be propping up local producers, makers and artisans like never before. A whopping 8,000 attendees came through last year, so we don’t need to tell you to get there early, do we?

When: Saturday 4 December, 12pm to 7pm

Christmas in Degraves

Melbourne

There's something charming about Degraves Street any time of year, so you can understand this Christmas market makes the cut when a little efestive cheer is added. Expect buskers belting out silly season classics, retailers taking their wares to the streets and street-side snacks to boot. This one's running every Saturday until the end of December.

Heide Christmas Market

This year, Heide is working with Fitzroy's iconic Rose St. markets for a festive collection of local makers and producers. Given the calibre of the two organisations, it's a given that the selection of stalls will be nothing but A1 grade—plus, it's held in the sublime Heide Sculpture Garden which'll make for a delightful day out regardless of if bring anything home with you or not.

When: Saturday 11 December, 10am to 3pm

Makers Christmas Market

Horsham

There’s nothing quite like a regional market, and you’re certainly not going to find what’s at the stalls at Horsham’s Makers Christmas Market anywhere else. Most years see at least 60 local artisans selling their goods alongside local food trucks serving up honest country grub.
