THE VERDICT
Strolling through a leafy botanic garden, soft light peering through the treetops, delicious drink in hand.
That’s how drinking a cocktail at Bar Ferdinand feels, where nature is imbued in every aspect of the dining experience. The intimate 21-seat cocktail bar’s drinks list is structured like a walk through a (fictional) Melbourne garden, with each cocktail designed to capture a different aspect of the environment.
Brought to life by Bar Manager Greg Thompson (Apollo Inn, Gimlet at Cavendish House), the cocktail list inspiration comes from Camellia, Rose, Eucalypt, Herb, Arid, Fern, Oak, and Blackberry. While the drinks will change with the seasons, just like nature does, the garden structure will not.
If the classics are more up your alley, there are two signature cocktails that might call your name (and we hear will never change): a house martini of gin, vodka, Cocchi Americano and apple mint, and a Japanese Slipper. Fun fact: the Japanese Slipper was actually invented back in 1984 in the same building where Bar Ferdinand is now located, so this functions as an homage to that history.
When it comes to food, the menu is tight and designed in the style of a picnic hamper. There are snacks and small plates to pair perfectly with your drink of choice, like oysters, roasted macadamias, anchovies, a German pretzel, and a Wagyu pot pie.
From the moody interiors that spotlight maximalist florals, suede seating, marble countertops and shadowy lighting, to the inherently historic feel of the heritage-listed building, Bar Ferdinand makes a beautifully sophisticated place for a cocktail in the city. Whether it’s a cosy date, a well-deserved after-work drink or the start of a bigger night out, go treat yourself to a cocktail in the garden.
