THE VERDICT
Wally’s Albert Park was established on a sense of serendipity—a right place, right time, kind of situation. Years later, the cosy wine bar retains that same charm. In a suburb where sleek bars and eateries can be found everywhere you look, hospitality veteran Baxter Pickard’s love for French charm (and French wine, naturally) stands out at Wally’s.
In the years since opening in April 2024, Wally's has grown from a wine bar into a refined restaurant, where the food menu rotates frequently and stays true to the venue’s seasonal, European-inspired ethos. Expect dishes that pair beautifully with a good pour, along the lines of scallops with café de Paris butter, beef tartare with ricotta salata and potato crisps, steak frites, and a half roast chook with mustard soubise. For $110pp, you can take the guesswork out of your visit and enjoy the set menu, instead.
The interior is designed by Melbourne-based Studio A.mi and leans into that same European sensibility, with mirrored ceilings, velvet banquettes, brass tables, and warm lamplight that bathes the room with familiarity. Wine bottles line the walls, and the wine list is the rare kind that you’ll actually enjoy perusing. It features an extensive, globally sourced collection designed for casual drinkers and wine snobs alike, with rare back-vintage bottles and auction finds for the real experts among us.
For those who do know their wine (or are keen to learn), Wally's also hosts a calendar of intimate wine-led experiences and events, often led by local producers and sommeliers.
The neighbourhood feel at Wally’s is there whether you’re parked up indoors or outdoors, with furry friends also welcome outside—and what’s more European than that?
