THE VERDICT

At Albert Park, you’ll typically find sleek eateries and bars residing in almost every nook and cranny. For owner Baxter Pickard, that was the story of how he came to establish Wally’s: by being in the right place at the right time. By stumbling upon a vacant corner located next door to Bread Club, he envisioned a wine bar fueled by his love for wine and so, brought it to fruition.

Heavily inspired by European design, Pickard linked up with Melbourne-based Studio A.mi for the chic interior. Think mirrored ceilings that exude French charm and velvet banquettes paired with brass tables for that Mediterranean aesthetic. At dinner time, you’re merely illuminated by warm-toned lamps hanging above and atop each table for a pretty intimate and cosy time.

The real highlight at Wally’s, however, is found in the carefully curated ‘book of wine’ for beginners and oenophiles alike. Flick through the pages and you’re spoilt for choice on low-cost to premium wines. Come through with any deep-seated wine craving you can think of, and it’ll most likely be satisfied by Pickard’s collection of rare back-vintage bottles and wines procured from auctions. And in true wine bar fashion, there's a row of bottles decorating the walls, so you know you’re in trusty hands.

And about the food, Wally’s boasts a rotational menu led by Head Chef Damon McIvor (Waxflower Bar, Vex Dining). They opt for locally-sourced produce from the Goulburn River and tailor each dish to complement the changing seasons.

Wally’s seats up to 47 people, with a choice between indoor or outdoor seating, and there’s no limit on furry friends joining in on the fun for the latter dining option.
