The Verdict

The old Ponsonby fire station is home to Mary’s, a neighbourhood café serving up a sizeable and scrumptious menu for breakfast, brunch and dinner. The high ceilings, stained glass windows and exposed bricks add a lovely look and feel to the place, perfect for early breakfasts, leisurely lunches and coffee dates. Favourites on the menu include vegan sticky black rice, tuna nicoise and the halloumi and tofu toasted sandwich (with the avocado rose) you see all over Instagram. They also have delish baking made on site.

Sumi

It’s a Tuesday night in Auckland city but you’d easily mistake it for the weekend at Sumi. The new izakaya spot by owner-chef Jason Lee (Wakuwaku, Katsu Katsu, Tsuru Tsuru) in City Works Depot is humming.

Kinfolk

Funny that the first thing I noticed about Kinfolk had little to do with the actual food—rather, it was the artwork on the back wall depicting three women on lilos, eating pasta. I like this place already, had been my immediate thought.
