Whisky lovers of Australia descend on the apple isle for Tas Whisky Week. It's almost sold out, but there are still a few events left! You can celebrate World Oyster Day on the water with a whisky and seafood cruise along the Derwent. Test yourself with a blind tasting of Lark whiskies at The Still. Enjoy an indulgent 5-course whisky degustation dinner at The Tasman’s Peppina restaurant. Plus there are popup events around town. 7K Distillery and the New Sydney Hotel are releasing their Irish dry stout aged Tassie whisky and cocktail bar Rude Boy is running a special late night menu all week.
Beaker Street Festival (August 12-24)

It’s Hobart’s annual winter science festival that lights up the city with curiosity! In typical Tassie fashion, Beaker Street Festival is also putting on a suite of food and bev events. There’s an Antarctic jazz lounge with musicians, talks and special cocktails, and “Scientists in the Pub” sees roving scientists station themselves in Hobart venues like The Whaler and Altar Bar, waiting to answer your thoughtful questions about the world (pint in hand). Plus, there’s Taste of Country: ningina Palawa kipli piyura kitina-ta (“to give, to get, to bring Palawa food”), a walk and exploration of traditional Palawan foods with a special menu for the festival. Out of town, join a Dark Sky Dinner of astronomy and gastronomy at Frogmore Creek Cellar Door.
MAMA Mia! It’s An Italian Bake Sale
MAMA bakery’s regular Domenica Mattina (aka. Sunday Morning) bake sale is on again! Every second Sunday, like clockwork, you can head on down to Pitzi pasta bar to scoop up one of MAMA’s 100% sourdough croissants and seasonal specials like ricotta and spinach torta salata, focaccia, cornetti and other “treats with a strong Italian accent”! They’re always switching it up, but crowd favourites include sopressa and smoked scamorza croissant, sour cherry and almond croissant and Vegemite and parmesan scroll. There’ll be coffee and prosecco, and the famous Espressomisu will even make an appearance. Next one is August 17. 9am til sold out.
Seafood-focused Restaurant Sylvie Switches It Up With A Casual, Cocktail Bar Direction

Hobart's pescetarian fine-diner has pivoted to a la carte. The new Fiskebar form is a tapas style menu that still heroes the finest possible fresh seafood and produce in Southern Tas.
"We wanted to make it more accessible so more guests can enjoy the amazing quality Tassie seafood we're able to source every week,” Chef Martin Dreyer says. “Not everyone can sit down for a 14 course degustation, but most people can stop in for a few small plates or a meal with friends. We change our menu every week, and this way it's easy for people to come in and try something fresh each time."
Think, crumpets with uni, konbu-cured garfish lightly cooked over charcoal and cuttlefish sashimi and abalone skewers.

“When we can get it in, Tassie Alfonsino is my absolute favourite fish to use,” Dreyer says. “Almost like Waygu of the sea.”
Their drinks menu skews towards the classic cocktails - martinis, Manhattans, cosmopolitans - with little seasonal twists.
Speak, Sing and Sip Your Heart Out At The Alabama Hotel
Pubs and poetry? Perfect. Poetica Collective has launched their regular artsy sessions at Tasmania’s quirky arts hotel and bar, The Alabama. It’s an open mic night of spoken word poetry and storytelling, with soul tunes playing between performances and the Alabama bar slinging drinks and their classic toasties. It’s cosy, it’s creative, it’s a cut above your average pub gig.

“The bigger dream is to expand,” organiser Ava Leary says. “Bringing down incredible movement speakers and powerful Australian artists to perform and share their stories with the Hobart community.”
Dust off the poetry journal and down some dutch courage - you’re up next.
Keep an eye on their socials to catch the next event.
