Open 24 hours, 7 days a week, the Bakery On O’Connell is a proudly South Australian-owned and operated family business baking over 200 products on premises. Their selection of hearty pies and cakes and tarts satisfy at all hours of the day. But you can’t go past their trademarked Nutella hearts – chocolate-filled, heart-shaped donuts glazed in colourful icing. Perfect for Valentine’s Day.

In operation since 1925,  third-generation Perryman’s Bakery pies and sausage rolls are made using local meat from its neighbour Tynte Street Quality Meats, with other ingredients such as eggs, and even the beans to make its daily coffees, sourced from South Australian local suppliers.

Shadow Baking

The team from Sydney-based gourmet gelato maker Messina have brought their cult-followed Shadow Baking to the shores of Glenelg. You can’t go past one of Shadow Baking’s glazed pastry classics – think chocolate croissants and custard tart danishes – while the vegemite, avocado and fermented chilli scroll is a must-try for savoury lovers. A North Adelaide outpost is slated to open in early 2026.

Butter & Toast

Case in point: this Melbourne Street-based bakery’s naturally leavened sourdough donuts, with flavours such as Lemon Meringue, Salted Caramel, Pandan, and Vietnamese Coffee. Prove Patisserie

Founded in late 2020 by Anna Rogers and pastry chef Megan Bowditch, Prove Patisserie started out as a wholesale supplier to Adelaide cafes and restaurants. Now a fully fledged, hand-crafted artisanal bakery in Stepney, locals flock to Prove for their buttery pastries, fresh sourdough bread and daily baked goods, which often sell out fast. Seating is also limited so get in early on weekends. 

Fold

124 Port Road, Hindmarsh

The newest addition to Adelaide’s bakery scene is Fold. Originally a wholesale pastry supplier to local favourites such as Gang Gang, Dante’s Deli and Spread Deli, Fold opened its own pastry-focused bakery and coffee shop in early 2025 right next to the Entertainment Centre. Regulars love the rotating selection of house-made delicacies, from seasonal danishes and gourmet croissants to inventive filled pastries. Pair with a specialty coffee or one of Fold’s fruity mocktails.

Abbots & Kinney

Taking its name from Abbot Kinney, an American visionary who created Venice Beach in California, Abbots & Kinney started as a tiny pop-up patisserie and coffee stall in Adelaide. Today, the bakery boasts two permanent locations in the CBD and one in Unley, baking daily a range of European pastries and specialty breads (they make a very authentic French baguette), as well as toasties to grab and go. Pre-orders can be made before 10am for next-day pickup if you don’t want to risk missing out.

Mascavado

Founded by pâtissier Lea Chairesa in 2020, Mascavado has in five short years earned a reputation as a go-to café for coffee and pastries in the CBD. A one stop shop for breakfast, lunch, brunch, the French-style patisserie offers Paris-worthy pastries and creamy cheesecakes served with specialist coffee, inside the former bank-turned-cool-cafe space. For a culinary twist, try the bakery’s hybrid Creme Brulee Danish.

Satisfy your cookie cravings at Blondie’s Bakehouse. Founder Maria Zisi started the New York-style cookie business, whose classics include NYC, Double Choc, Red Velvet, Biscoff, Oreo, in her home kitchen about five years ago. Growing from a home-based venture to supplying cafes and having a pop-up presence at Rundle Mall, (look out for its baby pink packaging), Blondie’s Bakehouse is next slated to arrive in Glenelg.
