Adelaide is fast becoming a veritable jazz hub, with the city playing host to weekly jazz nights and ticketed events across your favourite pubs and live music haunts. So which places do a good jazz night?
Fortunately, we've done the research for you, so all that's left to do is put on a dapper outfit and head out on the town for a night of unforgettable music. Inspired by the sounds of the Jazz Age and the crooners of yesteryear, here are the best jazz clubs in Adelaide for a night of live music.
Memphis Slim’s House of Blues
22 Gilbert Place, Adelaide

One of Adelaide’s best-known live music bars, Memphis Slim’s House of Blues is tucked underneath Tennessee-themed bar Shotgun Willie’s in the CBD. Named after legendary blues pianist Memphis Slim, the Americana vibes inside this establishment feel like a Chicago-meets-New Orleans blues basement club (think lots of old exposed brick and dim lighting) with live music in the likes of blues, jazz, soul and roots music.
Check out their Live In the Basement gig guide each week to see who’s playing, but jazz or no jazz, you’ve got yourself an entertaining night out at Memphis Slim’s.
The Jazz Room
401 Greenhill Road, Tusmore

The Jazz Room at the Burnside Ballroom is an intimate, ticket-only jazz experience that takes audiences on a journey through the genre’s colourful history. Set to the backdrop of a dimly lit room filled with candles reminiscent of a vintage 1920s New Orleans club, the hour-long live show features a small group of musicians playing iconic jazz, blues, and soul compositions, complete with spontaneous improvisation and engaging storytelling about the artists.
Theatre-meets-jazz perfection. Shows are held sporadically throughout the year and bookings are essential.
Grace Emily Hotel
232 Waymouth Street, Adelaide

One of Adelaide’s oldest pubs is also one of the city’s best live jazz spots. The Grace Emily Hotel, located the colourful West End, hosts its rough-and-ready Gremily Jazz Jam every Wednesday, an open mic night where local jazz fiends battle it out onstage inside the establishment’s cosy band room.
Grab a pint, settle in with the local music crowd and treat your ears to some unfiltered mid-week jazz talent.
Pastel Wine Bar
47 O'Connell Street, North Adelaide

One of Adelaide’s best bars for an ambient wine and dine, Pastel Wine Bar, comes alive on Tuesday nights with its weekly jazz night.
Featuring some of Adelaide’s best jazz musicians, the atmosphere is cosy, intimate and music focused, where you can settle at the cool bar with a glass of wine (and a bowl of the best fries we've had in Adelaide), and feel like you’ve been transported to a funky wine bar somewhere in Europe.
Ninteen Ten
143 Hindley Street, Adelaide

Inspired by the iconic glitz and glamour of old, rootftop buresque bar Nineteen Ten hosts several times a year its special jazz night called "Minsky's Neon Nights", featuring two hours of vibrant jazz helmed by musician extraordinaire Zac Treloar, accompanied by the colourful bar's biggest burlesque stars.
Chatting and bopping over cocktails with friends, come here for an Art Deco-inspired night of roaring '20s jazz and funky beats that feels infinitely worlds away for the Adelaide traffic below.
Leigh Street Luggage
22A Leigh Street, Adelaide

Located on a lively cobblestone laneway in Adelaide's CBD, Leigh Street Luggage is a recently renovated, aviation-themed cocktail bar that's brimming with people any given evening of the week.
With cosy boths and a huge array of bevvies, the jewel of this venue is its weekly jazz bar (our fave combo is the saxonist and double bass), where visitors are serenaded by the sounds of decades gone by. Nostalgia-core at its finest.
Union Hotel
70 Waymouth Street, Adelaide

Another city-based pub serving up jazz on Wednesdays is the Union Hotel. For the last four years, this sandstone CBD beauty has been inviting both local and interstate jazz musicians to spice up the airwaves, with some of the country's best vocalists, pianists, and saxophone players on rotation.
These classy nights promise a bevvy of jazz classic, and some original songs too, so even if you come every week, you're sure to have a different experience each time. Kick off is from 5:30 p.m. with Union's resident DJ playing some jazz tunes before live music starts at 6 p.m. till 8 p.m.
Thirsty? Happy hour is from 4 p.m to 6 p.m. and a collection of the pub's favourite entrees from the menu go for just $10 all night.
