How I Holiday: Hugh Sheridan’s Whirlwind One-Day Adelaide Itinerary
Welcome to How I Holiday, a series of travel stories and recommendations shared by friends of Urban List from Aotearoa and Australia.
Hugh Sheridan's been a beloved household face for what feels like forever on Aussie TV. First winning hearts on Packed to the Rafters, he’s since carved out a career that moves effortlessly between TV, stage and music—from musical theatre show-stoppers to smooth jazz sets with his California Crooners Club. These days, Hugh’s life is as much about where he’s going as what he’s creating, and when it comes to his home town, he knows how to make a day count.
What’s a local Adelaide spot you always take visitors to?
King William Road, Hyde Park. My connection to this spot goes way back. When Mum was pregnant with me, she actually laid the first brick on that road as the mayoress. Back then there were only two shops, now it’s a full lifestyle precinct. It’s like taking a cute walk through a piece family history.

Which neighbourhood do you think best reflects the real Adelaide right now, and what do you love about spending time there?
Henley Beach and Grange. These beaches still feel like the Adelaide I grew up with. They’ve kept that authentic, easy-going vibe and really show off how beautiful our state is.

Where’s your local cafe? What’s your go-to order?
My local is Veneziano on Melbourne Street. I usually order an oat latte and either a toastie or a slice of banana bread, depending on how much running around I’ve got that day.
Where’s the best spot for a pub feed?
Honestly, our pubs are some of the best anywhere. My go-tos are The Lion, The Kentish and The Cremorne, classics that always deliver.
What’s the best wine bar and what are you drinking?
Whenever I’m back in Adelaide, I find myself at East End Cellars. It’s easily one of the best wine bars in the city. Their list is legendary and the whole place has that relaxed, European laneway energy I love. I usually settle in with a glass of Kanta Adelaide Hills Riesling.

Who are some Adelaide creatives, makers or small business owners you think deserve more love?
I always make a point of stopping into One Rundle Trading and their flower bar when I’m in Adelaide. It is my go-to for beautiful gifts, little trinkets and those last-minute touches you suddenly realise you need. The store on Melbourne Street and is absolutely stunning.
And I have to mention Billie Justice Thomson, the South Australian artist who won the 2026 Adelaide Fringe Poster Competition with her incredible piece “Cockatoo Call.” Her work captures so much personality and a real sense of Adelaide charm. She’s a brilliant local talent who deserves all the love coming her way.
Where do you go when you want to feel inspired or get a reset—nature spot, gallery, venue, anywhere?
The Art Gallery of South Australia - Always full of incredible work and totally underrated. I also love wandering through the Botanic Gardens, strolling past Festival Theatre, or heading down to the beach, all part of Adelaide’s charm.
Is there a community or cultural space in Adelaide that means something special to you?
The Capri Theatre, Goodwood – An iconic Adelaide treasure. I’ve got so many childhood memories there, the big organ, the old-school atmosphere, and seeing movies in that beautiful space.
Which local events, markets or festivals do you look forward to every year?
Choosing a festival in the Festival State – It’s a tough call, but the Fringe has a special place in my heart, especially next year as I’m bringing back my band, the California Crooners Club, for the first time in six years.

If you had one day to show someone ‘your’ Adelaide, what would the itinerary look like?
A morning trip to the Fleurieu Peninsula with my favourite off all treats HeliStar, that way your guests get to see the dynamic coastline of Adelaide and the beautiful colours! Land for a couple of McLaren Vale wineries, lunch at Star of Greece, then back to the city for a stroll through the Botanic Gardens, an AFL game at Adelaide Oval, Or Carols By Candlelight in Elder Park! Then finishing the night exploring the bars and nightlife, finding the right tunes to dance to that make our city so unique.
