From the crunch of a freshly baked baguette after a trip to the farmers markets, a post-walk coffee and pastry in the sun, to a piping hot pie (with all the flaky pastry crumbs) on a weekend—here in Tāmaki Makaurau we’ve got the full line-up of baked goods to satisfy any bakery craving. From cosy neighbourhood institutions to the next wave of bakers bringing their unique take on classics, there’s such a variety of baking you can find in Tāmaki Makaurau. So much so, we’ve extended our go-to picks for the ultimate bakery run of 2026.

Here are the best bakeries to try in Tāmaki Makaurau.

Beabea’s Bakery

160 Garnet Road, Westmere, Auckland

Ben and Sarah opened up their neighbourhood bakery Beabea’s in Westmere, and we’re making a run to this side of town just for our pastry fix. They’re no stranger to the pastry game, with Ben rollin’ some of the best pastries in Tāmaki Makaurau. Imagine Kiwi classics, reimagined and elevated with the techique of a seasoned pastry chef—from a soft, fluffy bun with a big squiggle of pink coconut icing, that crispy ‘Kiwi Onion’ pastry stick, to a giant fluffy slice of fairy bread-inspired pastry. Plus their macadamia croissant and canelé are a solid go-to with a barista coffee there, for a slow start to the day at the seats out the front of the shop. Don’t leave without a pie too, it’s worth every bit of that flaky pastry that falls in the car seat on the drive home.

Cinnamon Squared

41 Victoria Street West, Auckland CBD

If you love a cinnamon bun, Cinnamon Squared in the heart of Tāmaki Makaurau has all the answers—or in this case, all the cinnamon buns. With the fluffiest cinnamon buns made with Ceylon cinnamon, known as “true cinnamon,” which is milder and sweeter than the spicy Cassia cousin, these fluffy buns are not too sweet, hitting the balance with the range of toppings you can get. Word on the street is that the team bake over 600 of these buns (in the signature rectangle trays) every day, and once you check out their menu you’ll see why. From a fluffy classic, to ones lathered with cream cheese, strawberry yoghurt topped, or chocolate ganache and cocoa-dusted number—they even have a limited edition flavour of the month (from Matcha cream to Earl Grey-infused mascarpone). Keep an eye out on their socials for their monthly flavours.

VANIYÉ Patisserie

1/7 Windsor Street, Parnell, Auckland | 2/15 Fleming Street, Onehunga, Auckland

What’s a bakery without patisserie? We’re talking elegant French pastries, both savoury and sweet. The cabinets at VANIYÉ have all your laminated pastry, hand-rolled baguette and beautiful French and Asian-inspired petit cakes from both locations. Chef-owner Sonia incorporates delicate Asian flavours into her patisserie, like a buttery, melt-in-your-mouth matcha sable, to mouthwatering combinations such as their gluten-free sesame sponge with coconut mousse and mango coulis, alongside French patisserie classics like the thousand layer millefeuille with Tahitian vanilla pastry cream. Don’t forget to get yourself a cinnamon custard roll with your coffee, too. For those who want to learn the art of patisserie, check out her masterclasses held at their newly-built, state-of-the-art Onehunga HQ atelier to hone in on your pastry skills.

Wen & Yen Bakery

We’re a sucker for a pastry, but did you know that you can also get a bangin’ gluten-free one? Enter Wen and Yen, changing up the gluten-free and dairy-free pastry scene. If you know about their popular brioche doughnuts and pies (gluten and dairy-free options also available) then you’ll know you have to get there early before they sell out. Check out their socials for their limited edition donut of the month and gluten-free fluffy swiss rolls too (which you can order by the slice—we can confirm are absolutely delicious).

Fort Greene

327 Karangahape Road, Auckland

We’ve always loved the sourdough and pastries at Fort Greene, but since the opening of their pastry room (making our wildest pastry dreams come true)—we dream of those perfect honeycomb layers on the daily. Nothing beats enjoying their insane pastry line-up while watching the magic happen at the shop, with their signature Reuben sandwich and a coffee in hand. They’ve released a new sourdough menu this year too (consider that a sign to pop in).

Wild Wheat

Various locations

When the sourdough starter is over 20 years old, you know it’s going to be a good loaf. Wild Wheat’s sourdough has a huge following across Tāmaki Makaurau. Having started in a small wholesale factory in 1999, they began to build their rep across the restaurant and cafe scene as the go-to sourdough slinger. Now they’ve got multiple locations so you can get your fresh sourdough bread fix all across the city. From kūmara sourdough to sourdough baguettes, as well as international breads and specialty breads, they’ve got literally a loaf, bun, bagel and pastry for every occasion. Their latest sourdough incorporates leftover sourdough made into a porridge and reincarnated back into an incredible loaf—this is the kind of no waste, all-taste ethos we’re here for.

Maison des Lys Pâtisserie

567 Great North Road, Grey Lynn, Auckland | 403 Mount Eden Road, Mount Eden, Auckland

Plant-based, dairy-free pastry lovers, Maison des Lys has got you. Pastry chef and owner Driscilla started up Maison des Lys to bring a dairy-free alternative to the pastry game. After missing French pastries when she moved to Aotearoa, she set out to research and develop vegan pastries and we’re so grateful she decided to share this with the city. Those who are vegan or dairy intolerant can finally get their hands on a croissant that stands up to it’s buttery counterparts. The outer layers are crispy, flakey and the cross-section is oh so fluffy. Pair it with an oat flat white and you’ve got a dreamy vegan pastry breakfast.

Florets Bakery

596 Great North Road, Grey Lynn, Auckland

Maya Handley is the sourdough whisperer. Having trained and lived in New York for over a decade, she brought her artisan bread-making skills to Aotearoa and set up Florets in Grey Lynn. Sourcing only sustainably-grown and local wholegrain flour, Maya and her team take great care in making wholegrain sourdough and other sweet treats (like their famous rye, sea salt and dark chocolate cookie). Pop in to this neighbourhood fave for your nutritious seeded loaf and sweet treat.

Mor Bakery

158 Remuera Road, Remuera, Auckland

Having popped up in Aotearoa after returning from their patisserie stints overseas, Kelsie and Laura started their patisserie studies right here in Tāmaki. They met back in Aotearoa and Mor began as a pop-up in 2022. A year later, they set up their own brick and mortar shop—you can now enjoy their pastries with a seat by the window, watching the world go by. We love their use of seasonal, fresh fruits amongst buttery layers of icing-dusted pastry. Swoon.

Daily Bread

What started as a bread project by night has grown and expanded to multiple locations across Tāmaki Makaurau. Daily Bread is a Tāmaki Makaurau institution, and the latest opening of their New Lynn flagship bakery is upping their bread game further (their main bakery was formerly in Point Chev, which side note: now is a cracker rotisserie chicken sandwich shop by Daily Bread). I remember taking multiple buses to get to the Point Chev bakery when I visited from Pōneke, just for that hazelnut pain au chocolat. Now being based in Tāmaki Makaurau, it’s still one of my go-to picks when I’m ever near a Daily Bread spot.

Giapo

12 Gore Street, Auckland CBD

Team Giapo have stepped out of the freezer and into the oven with their latest addition to their treats menu—Giapo Baking. With freshly-baked, fluffy gluten-free baking (think cinnamon rolls, hokey pokey cookies, and my fave—chocolate-dipped donuts with crunchy cacao nibs and the softest interior) made daily by the talented crew at Giapo. I’ve been a long-time fan of their cookies (without even realising they’re all gluten-free) and can confirm their latest baking offerings are just as incredible. Not only with sweet, but they have recently included savoury baking too—think cheese scones with butter, homemade meat balls, and pizza (and yes, it’s all gluten-free). It’s a game-changer for gluten-free friends and fam and a must-visit. Jump on the Giapo app or pop in-store to check out what’s coming out of the oven and on offer each day. Ice-cream scoop addition (you can add it on most of the sweet baking items) encouraged.

Richoux Patisserie

119 Main Highway, Ellerslie

Owner-baker Jason Hay at Richoux Patisserie is a master baker and vegan pastry whisperer. Having been crowned Supreme Winner at the vegan pie awards last year, with their Vegan Nacho Pie (pictured), Richoux Patisserie are known for their unique pie flavour combinations (both vegan and non-vegan offerings), which are always a hit with locals and tourists alike. From lemongrass pork green curry pie, steak with caramelised onion and blue cheese, legendary lobster, to vegan burger pie—head there for something to suit every pie mood. Side note: While you definitely have to grab a pie, take a moment to admire their other offerings like their sandwiches and filled rolls, they’re packed with ingredients and reasonably priced too.

MIBO

Mibo had me at black sesame croissant. Only available on Saturdays, it’s like black sesame pudding and a buttery croissant all rolled into one. During the week, the apple, naisu and caramel pie in its flaky encasing is also one you can’t miss. Pair it with a salted plum espresso fizz or matcha for a golden, sweet and savoury pastry experience.

Carmel - Israeli Street Food

Go for the fluffy pitas (specifically that crispy falafel number) and stay for the sweet treats at Carmel Israeli Street Food. With offerings like babka, cruffins and chocolate-cinnamon Rugelach croissants, it’s going to be hard to choose so you best bring a crowd. We’ll be back for the Crunchy Chicken Challah, stat.

Diehl’s Bakery

5/65 Hillside Road, Glenfield

For authentic German baked goods, look no further than Diehl’s Bakery. Open since ‘93 with an array of European breads, this bakery is a love letter from a German master baker. From poppy seed-coated Kaiser rolls, twisted chestnut-coloured loops of Bretzel, to the crackly crust of a rye sourdough Gassenhauer Bread—and that’s just to name a few of their bread offerings. If you love a sausage roll, check out their homemade sausage made with minced beef and pork encased in puff pastry. It’s a given you should grab something sweet too (it’s all about balance here), so if you spot the Berliner doughnuts or a sweet almond Brezel, don’t think twice.

Baker’s Diary

448 Rosebank Road, Avondale

Every Saturday, you can get Japanese-style baking from Baker’s Diary in Avondale. With Japanese breads like melon pan, mentaiko-filled French bread (spicy cod roe), curry pan and kakushoku (white tin loaf), as well as pie flavours like chicken katsu curry and sweet pastries like their matcha mochi azuki, there’s a reason they sell out quick. We advise going in early, so you don’t miss out.

Moustache Milk & Cookie Bar

It’s been over a decade since my first Moustache Milk & Cookie Bar, and I remember it to this day. It was during their epic cookie road trip on the cookie bus in Pōneke and I remember lining up for the famous cookie truck. It was so unassuming but took me back to my childhood—the texture and chew of the buttery cookie, the indulgent chocolate chunks that were scattered across each bite. All I needed was a glass of milk and I was there (which nowadays, you have the option to add in-store to relive that moment). I am in absolute awe of the work ethic from D, who now has multiple Moustache Milk & Cookie Bar sites, and has just opened one more in Henderson. Nowadays there’s not only cookies, but their famous cookie pies (with limited-edition flavours), and cookie desserts like a hot cookie skillet or even a tub of Moustache Cookie ice cream available in-store. You can also order a glass of milk (from plain to chocolate, strawberry and banana) to have with your cookie the old-school way—or a thickshake combo (or as they call it, thiccshake—we’re looking at you, Cookie Dough Thiccshake).

Northside Bakery

This family-run institution has been in the bakery game since 1980 and recently had a modern day bakery glow-up last year. Northside Bakery are paying homage to bakery classics with Asian flavours too. They also have a standout banh mi brimming with all the goods, and only for $10 each.

Honourable mention: Off On Wednesdays

Various Pop-Ups, Auckland

Self-confessed biscuit fanatic Emily Shih runs a micro-bakery, Off On Wednesdays, where you can sample her mouth-watering biscuit creations at pop-up events across Tāmaki. Emily’s attention to detail—from a biscuit’s texture, type of wholegrain flour, butter to sugar ratio—are all carefully considered, to form the most perfect, meltingly crisp, bite. Originally from Vancouver, she’s stepping up the bikkie scene, championing locally grown wholegrain flour and collaborating with local cafes. She’s currently popping up every Friday at Millers Coffee where you can get her biscuits (or a biscuit box for the ultimate cuppa and tea situation), as well as weekly baking specials in the form of tarts, sweet pies and cakes with seasonal produce. Pop the jug on and grab yourself a box of these treats, stat.
