The Verdict

West is best? Hell yes! Rosebank Coffee & Kitchen is showing Auckland how it’s done at their stunning cafe. Think mouth-watering French toast alongside charcoal lattes and doughnut towers. Yep, this one deserves a top spot on your must-visit list.

Swinging its doors open last year, the Avondale gem has quickly become one of the best cafes in Auckland—and it’s thanks to the friendly folk behind Rosebank. Co-owners, Carlos Cumberbatch and Jono Clarke, show their passion and dedication in every aspect of the stunning café.

Situated in the industrial area of Avondale, the café is an unexpected but oh-so welcome gem. Rosebank Coffee & Kitchen has modern vibes with a polished concrete floor, wooden furnishings and a marble counter. The space is filled with the sound of soft jazz music and the smell of brewed coffee—you’ll want to stick around for breakfast and lunch. 

Carlos and Jono go over and above to source the very best ingredients and work closely with sustainable and ethical partners. Their fish is line-caught by Lee Fish, while their jamón ibérico ham comes from Spain—costing a casual $1000 per leg of meat. The better-than-your-average café fare is served fine dining-style. Is this lunch or a work of art? It’s anyone’s guess!

Visit Rosebank for breakfast and choose between the likes of granola, omelette or unmissable dukkah eggs paired with smoked eggplant. Personally, we’ve got a soft spot for Rosebank’s next-level bene. Served with hash, mushrooms and free-farmed bacon, the saffron hollandaise will have you coming back again (and again and again).

Those with a sweet tooth won’t be able to go past Rosebank’s signature French toast. The dish features cubes of bread, perfectly fluffy on the inside and with a satisfying crunch on the outside. It comes with dollops of piped banana toffee (oh my!), mandarin sauce and salted cocoa crumble. Best breakfast everrr.

For something lunch-ier, you’ll find some equally delish options. Choose between miso-cured Ora King salmon or a pretzel bun packed with tender pork. Vegans are well and truly catered for with soft tofu dish showcasing black turtle beans and dehydrated watermelon. Vege or not, you need to try this meal.

And, no matter what day you visit, Rosebank whips up some incredible lunch specials. Crafted by head chef Johannes Carroux (who has a background in Michelin-starred restaurants), the multiple-course lunches are priced from $45. Visit for a working lunch and these delicious feasts are also available as shared lunch options—your boss will be seriously impressed.

Wash down with a local craft beer of vino from Rosebank’s extensive wine list—hooray for licensed cafes! You’ll also find caffeinated bevvies, organic tea and refreshing smoothies. The café also showcases Misty Day Plant Potion vibrant lattes. Our top two? Activated charcoal and blue spirulina.

Last and in no ways least, no trip is complete without a sweet treat (or two). The cabinet is chockablock with s’mores tart, salted caramel slice, spiced apple pie and vegan lemon cheesecake. Rosebank is more than happy to whip up custom-made cakes for any occasion including the ultimate cake yet: a doughnut tower. It’ll have you counting down the days until your birthday.

Visit for breakfast, lunch and everything between. And, if you’re particularly fond of this spot (trust us, you will be) the Rosebank team is only too happy to take care of your next function or event—they recently hosted a wedding.
