It’s not every day you stumble upon a café that does it ALL. We’re talking an outdoor courtyard, all-day brunch menu and a bar serving R18 bevvies. The Collins Café & Bar (aka your new fave café) does all of the above…and more!
Located in Greenhithe, this North Shore gem is your one-stop brunch spot. The bustling café is set in a renovated villa, giving it a cosy feel where you could happily spend hours.
The spacious interior is divided into three areas. The is foyer decked out with bar stools and moody black decor, while the the main dining area offers natural lighting with homely wooden tables. Heading towards the courtyard, you’ll find armchairs and an open fireplace—hellooo new winter hang-out!
Outside, there’s a large lawn scattered with wooden picnic tables and plenty of greenery. If you’ve got little ones in tow, they’ll love the dedicated kids’ menu and the Collins Park playground across the road. Your fur child is also catered for with water bowls and dog treats on hand.
It wouldn’t be an excellent café without a mouth-watering, lip-smacking menu. The Collins has this well and truly covered, whipping up incredible sweet and savoury dishes from their all-day brunch menu.
In terms of savoury, the chorizo and potato hash is a crowd-favourite starring a bed of sautéed potatoes, spinach and chunky salsa topped with a perfectly fried egg. There are also three equally delish egg bene offerings: Manuka-smoked bacon, house-cured salmon or mushrooms. Personally, we can’t go past their salmon bagel with whipped cream cheese, capers and dill—it’s the perfect fusion of flavours.
Those with a sweet tooth will be tearing their hair out as they toss up between waffles or The Collins’ signature French toast. The waffles change weekly with the most-recent creation taking inspiration from apple pie. Think cinnamon-spiced Belgium waffles topped with butterscotch sauce and chocolate crumb—yum!
As for their French toast, it takes inspo from the southern states of America. We’re talking cubes of brioche bread encrusted with macadamia and cornflakes. The nuggets of happiness are delightfully crunchy on the outside, yet soft and fluffy on the inside and the result is dee-licious.
For a more lunch-esque meal, opt for the grilled chicken burger, braised lamb shoulder and quinoa salad, or the much-loved fatoush salad. Fitness folk will relish in the “all the good stuff” protein bowl with grilled chicken skewers, edamame, bean sprouts, pickled carrot and raw beetroot. Eating healthy doesn’t get much tastier than this!
If you’re after a quick bite to eat, there are also cabinet goodies made by The Collins’ resident pastry chef. The sweet treats take the cake here (pun intended) with the likes of ginger loaves, gluten-free orange almond cake and mammoth slices of carrot cake with lashing of cream cheese icing.
Wash it all down with a smoothie (we love the green delight with spirulina, coconut water, spinach and banana) or an expertly brewed coffee. If you’re after something “stronger” The Collins has you covered with wine, beer and spirits available.
What’s more, The Collins also know a thing or two about hosting a party! Wedding, outdoor barbecue, birthday shindig…they do it all. Their canapé menu is all about Canterbury lamb blackstrap, pork belly with pineapple salsa, salmon en croute as well as house-made marshmallows and bite-size Belgium choccy brownie.
There’s no doubt about it, The Collins Café & Bar ticks all the boxes. We know where we’ll heading for our next brunch catch-up! See you there.
