What's On August

Byron Bay Writers Festival

Various location

Celebrating 30 years, the Byron Bay Writers Festival has firmly cemented itself as a cultural inspiration tank for the Northern Rivers. Home to tents that spill with conversations, author readings, panel discussions and thought-provoking retellings of the inspiration behind the tale, it's an annual non-negotiable for many.

While previous years have faced muddy days on the Bangalow Showgrounds, 2026 sees the fest return to Byron across three big days. There'll be foreshore and town centre hubs which daypass ticket holders can freely walk between. Nabbing a coffee here and a slice of something tasty there of course. All in the name of supporting the many creators in the township of Byron Bay. Tickets go on sale in April.

Top Dog Film Festival

Brunswick Picture House, 30 Fingal St, Brunswick Heads NSW 2483

A complete red flag is someone who doesn't like dogs. And if they're not into dog films then run for the hills is the general consensus. So Top Dog Film Festival marks not only an exceptional celebration of dogs in films, but it'll be a room filled with warm-hearted people. It's the epic return that shows that dogs aren't just pets, they're heroes, healers and genuinely just the best.

Pack a tissue, or blame it on something in the air. You'll be in prime position to witness furbabes go on epic adventures, rescue with pure courage and see some seriously smart pooches that'll make you question everything you know about the human-doggo dynamic.

C.W. Stoneking at Brunswick Hotel

Hotel Brunswick, 4 Mullumbimbi St, Brunswick Heads NSW 2483

He's the insanely talented hokum blues crooner who knows exactly how to entertain a crowd. And this August, C.W. Stoneking dazzles from the stage at Brunswick Hotel. A regular on the Bluesfest lineup over the years, if you've been craving some heart-melting, belted out tunes with cheek and style, this is the gig on your must-attend list.

This jungle exotica giant among men has recently been touring without a band. Just a man, a guitar and the occasional mouth trumpet (yes, no trumpet, all mouth). It's genuinely a sight to behold. It kicks off at 6pm, so I recommend an early table at nearby River for salumi plates and clinks.
