If you’re a Gold Coast local, then you’ll already be familiar with Bleach* Festival. You know, that massive 12-day long arts festival that turns the Gold Coast into a hub of celebration for culture, music, design, art and individuality. This year, Bleach* will be held from 17 to 28 April, and has a jam-packed program of 44 events, including everything from large-scale opera, live music and comedy to award-winning dance and a political swimming carnival (more on that later).

Whether it’s dance, music, or art, we guarantee there’ll be something that excites you. But because there’s so much going on, we’ve decided to do some of the hard work for you and narrow the program down to seven must-see events. So, without further ado, here’s the events you should definitely make time for at this year’s Bleach* Festival.

Tectonic | Wednesday 17 to Sunday 21

This interactive and thrilling dance installation is presented by the award-winning ensemble Dancenorth and is sure to be a spectacle. Featuring 180 exercise balls buried in the sand, Tectonic is a celebration of movement, sound and sculpture. Inspired by conversations with locals on Poruma Island in the Torres Strait, Tectonic promotes discussions about rising sea levels and the fear of disappearing into the ocean. The exercise balls act as mini trampolines which allow the dancers to perform some truly amazing stunts. There’ll also be workshops from 9:00am from Thursday 18 April, so you can try your hand at some exercise ball gymnastics, if you’re brave enough

When: Performances at 6:30pm and 7:45pm every day
Where: Bleach* hub at Justins Park, Burleigh Heads
Cost: Free

Pyrophone Juggernaut | Wednesday 17 to Sunday 21 April

Inspired by a 250-year-old experimental music instrument, the Pyrophone Juggernaut is a massive ship-shaped organ. And it’s not your regular church-like organ. It’s the biggest hand operated, multi octave fire organ in the world. Yep, fire organ. This furnace driven instrument provides the ultimate entertainment and light show, and includes freight-liner alloy wheels, sub-frequency metallophones, fire-infused truck horns and a giant gong. It’s dazzling steam-punk aesthetic and it’s even more dazzling melodic sounds are things that truly need to be seen and heard to be believed.

When: 6pm to 8:15pm
Where: Bleach* hub at Justins Park, Burleigh Heads
Cost: Free

The Spiegeltent Gold Coast | Thursday 18 April to Sunday 12 May

Ok so this isn’t really one single event, but it’s too hard to narrow it down to just one. That’s why we recommend you check out literally any of the events happening under the Strut & Fret Production House’s Spiegeltent. This unique pop up venue will host a number of different events, including comedy, music, cabaret and theatre performances. Our recommendation? Check out Limbo Unhinged, an award-winning hypnotic spectacle of cabaret, circus and acrobatic performances. For more information, see the Spiegeltent program online here.

When: Various times
Where: The Spiegeltent Gold Coast, Cnr of Gold Coast Highway and TE Peters Drive
Cost: Various depending on event

Landing | Friday 26 to Saturday 27 April

This left-of-centre, yet totally relevant and politically-motivated ‘swimming carnival’ is a continuous relay and endurance act in which participants will swim the distance between Manus Island and Australia. Members of the audience are invited to participate or spectate, but be sure to register in advance if you’d like to swim. This metaphorical (but also quite literal) representation of the current immigration policy is designed to represent the struggles that asylum seekers face in their journey to Australia. Oh, and swimmers wear island-shaped hats, just in case the symbolism wasn’t strong enough already. If you love the idea of participating in some political and socially relevant performance art while also getting your exercise in, then this one’s for you.

When: From 6pm
Where: Gold Coast Aquatic Centre, Marine Parade, Southport
Cost: Free

Scribble Slam | Friday 26 to Saturday 27 April

Scribble Slam is an epic battle between two artists working in a 90-minute time limit to create their own design on a large wall. Think a freestyle rap battle, but with drawing. The artists can use whatever medium and style they prefer to create the art, however they will be completely unaware of what they are actually painting until the timer starts. Friday’s battle will be between artists SATR and Sortwo, and Saturday’s challenge will be between Shani Finch and Emmanuel Moore. So be sure to check it out and see just how exhilarating fast-paced art can be.

When: 5pm to 9pm
Where: Corner of Young St and Regent Lane, Southport
Cost: Free

There’ll be everything from jazz and blues to roots, funk, soul and RnB. Featuring five local musicians and bands over the course of the night, you’ll be treated to some diverse musical time travel. Not only that, but there’ll also be food trucks a-plenty as well as local restaurants serving up delicious eats, so get in early, grab yourself some tasty fare, and get ready for a night of clapping and toe-tapping.
