The Best Accommodation In Brunswick Heads To Book This Summer

By Hugo Mathers

Palm trees surround The Chalet Motel, which is some of the best accommodation in Brunswick Heads.

In the northernmost reaches of NSW, just south of the Queensland border, lies the quaint seaside town of Brunswick Heads. "Bruns" was originally inhabited by the Dur-ung-bil people, who were part of the larger Midjungbal tribe, before British cedar cutters settled in the area in the mid-19th century. Today it’s a popular destination for holidaymakers, and like much of the wider Northern Rivers region, the town is loved for its laid-back ocean and river beaches.

About 20 minutes north of Byron Bay, Brunswick Heads is surrounded by stunning natural beauty—The Brunswick River, Torakina Beach and Park, and Brunswick Heads Main Beach—popular local spots for swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, and surfing.

Away from the water, you can grab a classic pub lunch at the historic Hotel Brunswick, catch a movie at the vintage Brunswick Picture House, enjoy world-class cuisine at Fleet Restaurant, and shop at the town’s monthly farmers markets, its rows of boutique stores, and the Mina Mina Art Gallery.

Oh, and there’s also a bunch of top-notch places to rest your weary limbs after a day in the water. Here are some of the best accommodation in Brunswick Heads right now.

Bruns Surf Shack

A beachy hideaway built back in the 1950s, Bruns Surf Shack is part fisherman’s cottage, part luxury lodge. Redesigned in 2021, the home is lovingly decorated with hand-selected homewares and artworks, and kitted out with first-rate amenities including a fully stocked kitchen, espresso machine, soda stream, vinyl player, Pampa rugs, and a big Bodhi sofa. There’s also a "live-work" area with two desk spaces for remote workers, and the house is run on sustainable water and solar energy systems. Past guests have loved the backyard, opening up to a lush tropical garden and an alfresco dining area.
