7 Events We’re Rating At This Year’s Bleach* Festival

By Brooke Darling - 24 Mar 2017

If we didn’t already have enough things to do on the Gold Coast this month, the mammoth Bleach* arts and culture festival is taking the whole event scene to nek level.

There’s over 100 events being held across 17 days (March 31 to April 16) so, to save you trawling through the program, we’ve rallied together seven Bleach* Festival events we don’t wanna miss. Catchya there?

BLANC de BLANC

Run in conjunction with Bleach*, there’s no way we could overlook this sexy travelling cabaret when pulling together our festival must-hits. BLANC de BLANC is way cooler than any ordinary circus performance, ‘cause it’s adults only. Which means all of our favourite things: nudity, sexual references, flowing champagne and bubbles, heart-pumping musical remixes, glittering costumes, mind-bending circus performances, and energetic theatre, all under the magical veil of a purpose-built Spiegeltent circus tent. Don’t believe us? Watch a taster of the action here.

When: Wednesday, March 29 to Sunday, April 16
Where: Broadbeach Parklands, Broadbeach
Cost: Tickets from $41 to $81; book online

Frank Enstein

How often do we get to attend a world premier of anything on the Gold Coast? Answer: almost never! And that’s just one of the maaany reasons you should grab a ticket to Bleach* Festival’s Frank Enstein. A collab between The Farm and Co3, this magical and thought-provoking dance theatre act follows Frank as he “animates his world by making imaginary friends real”.

When: Friday, March 31 and Saturday, April 1
Where: Art Theatre Gold Coast, 135 Bundall Road, Surfers Paradise
Cost: Adults $35, Children $22.50; book online

Saltwater Sessions

Laying roots at Coolangatta’s beachside esplanade, Saltwater Sessions is designed to pay homage to our coastal lifestyle and local Aboriginal cultures. Grab your mates and kick back for an afternoon of free visual and musical entertainment, including performances from Dope Lemon (Angus Stone), Ash Grundwald, Tia Gostelow, and Emily Wurramara. Before you depart, wander up to Greenmount Hill and ponder over illuminated faces cast in the darkness, as part of art installation, Churaki Hill (6:30pm to 10pm).

When: Saturday, April 1; 3:30pm to 8pm
Where: Coolangatta Foreshore, Coolangatta
Cost: Free entry

Ash Grundwald Jam Session

Happening on opening weekend at the Coolangatta Hotel is a rare opportunity to join talented Aussie songwriter Ash Grundwald for a vibing jam session, complete with story telling and drinks for sale across the bar. BYO instrument.

When: Sunday, April 2; 12pm to 2pm
Where: The Coolangatta Hotel, Coolangatta

Fun Run

We wanna check out Fun Run for curiosity’s sake, if nothing else. How on Earth will they make light entertainment outta one man running on a treadmill on stage for five hours? It’s called art, peeps, and organisers have promised electric and interactive fun thanks to a bevvie of community performers, a cheeky emcee and flash mob, shiny lycra, pom poms, and a thumping soundtrack, where you’re invited to dance the evening away and likely burn a few calories while you’re at it (wink*).

When: Saturday, April 8; 3:30pm to 8:30pm
Where: Cavill Avenue, Surfers Paradise
Cost: Free to participate

Surf Safari Feast

The perfect way to kick off the weekend, Palm Beach’s Surf Safari Feast is a cheap and cheerful way to be part of the festival fun without having to break the bank or rally a babysitter. A salty line-up of musos headlined by Yes Sir Noceur, plus all your fave food trucks and pop-up offerings by adjoining local restaurants, this is sure to be one feel-good community night out.

When: Saturday, April 8, 4pm to 9pm
Where: Fifth Avenue, Palm Beach
Cost: Free entry

Bleach* At Burleigh

Closing out a mammoth 17-day party is Bleach* at Burleigh. Gather up the picnicking essentials, stake your claim on a piece of sand, and prepare for a blissful afternoon to the live soundtrack of Benny D Williams, Slip-on Stereo, and climaxing with the charismatic sounds of Peruvian salsa orchestra, Sabor y Control. If you’re not on your feet by the end of the night, you’re not doing it right. Can’t make it to Burleigh? Catch Sabor y Control at Bleach* at NightQuarter on Saturday, March 15.

When: Sunday, April 16, 2:30pm to 5:30pm
