The Gold Coast Airport’s 20-year Master Plan has been cleared for takeoff, with federal government approval locked in for its 2024 Master Plan.
The huge transformation is set to evolve the precinct into a sustainable, innovative and accessible transport and lifestyle hub, while cementing its role as one of the Gold Coast’s biggest economic drivers.
What's Included In The Master Plan?
Major upgrades on the horizon include a public plaza with future public transport connections (yes, finally), an expanded terminal, upgraded taxiways, new hotel accommodation, health and wellness facilities, a conference and technology hub, plus a retail village and travel centre.
The Southern Cross University expansion is also in the mix, creating a buzzing precinct that’s about much more than catching flights.
Where Will This Take Us?
Queensland Airports Limited Chief Executive Officer Amelia Evans said the Master Plan supports seamless connectivity throughout the Gold Coast and northern New South Wales.
“Ensuring GCA's connectivity and accessibility is vital for the success of both our airport and the regions we serve. It will also deliver an enduring legacy for the 2032 Games,” Ms Evans said.
“Our forecasts project 13 million passengers will pass through the airport annually by 2044—that’s more than double our current passenger figures. The mixed-use precinct will create a vibrant destination for people to work, relax, shop and connect. Our vision extends beyond being just an airport; we aim to be a destination in our own right.”
Beyond the traveller perks, the project will also support the local economy, with the airport’s economic contribution expected to nearly double to $990 million annually and support more than 6,000 jobs over the next two decades. Evans added: “We are a crucial value driver for the region and proudly play an important role in the economic vitality of southeast Queensland and northern New South Wales.”
With the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games on the horizon and a projected 13 million passengers flowing through the terminals each year by 2044, the Gold Coast Airport is firmly preparing for its level up yet.
