The Gold Coast well and truly comes alive in summer. The sun is shining, the skies are crystal clear and the ocean feels like a warm, salty bath you never want to get out of. Sure, there’s humidity and the occasional afternoon downpour, but for the most part, the coast is a pretty dreamy place to be this time of year.

But with the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) predicting hotter, wetter, and more humid conditions than usual, what’s the weather looking like for summer 2025-26 down south? Here’s everything you need to know to plan your sun, surf and sunset drinks on the Gold Coast this summer.

What’s The Forecast Looking Like This Summer?

According to the BoM, the Gold Coast will deliver the subtropical trifecta this summer: heat, humidity and afternoon showers. December through February will bring daytime temperatures in the high 20s—regularly hitting 25–30°C—while sea temperatures are set to hover around 25–27°C, making the water an easy call for a swim or surf.

However, “warm oceans can pump extra moisture and energy into the atmosphere, which can intensify storms,” said BoM senior climatologist Felicity Gamble. That added moisture also cranks up the humidity, making it feel hotter than the thermometer suggests—especially inland or around midday.

Rain is part of the summer package too, and this year it’s shaping up to be even wetter than usual. Expect short, tropical downpours, often in the late afternoon or evening. Storm bursts can roll in and pass just as quickly, so a sunny morning might flip to overcast by lunchtime, only to clear again by evening.

Your Best Summer Weather Windows

The Gold Coast in summer hits its stride early, as the most reliable weather conditions are in the morning. Sea breezes keep things cooler, the surf is at its cleanest and the humidity hasn’t ramped up yet. It’s prime time for beach runs, ocean dips or coffee-and-walk combos along Burleigh or Broadbeach.

By midday through early afternoon, UV and humidity peak, the sun turns fierce and the air gets sticky fast. This is your cue to slow the pace—hydrate, find shade and retreat somewhere cool. And if the inevitable summer shower rolls in (because it will), it’s usually brief. Think of it as an excuse to wait it out in a wine bar on Mermaid Beach, watch the storm from the Pav or linger in the shops on Burleigh’s James Street.

Evenings will bring a welcome drop in temperature and stickiness, with BoM reports showing that typical summer nights settle into the low to mid-20s while humidity eases overnight. If you like to exercise outdoors or enjoy dinner and drinks by the water, now’s your time.

How To Dress, Pack And Plan Ahead

Gold Coast summers demand lightweight and sun-safe style. By day, opt for breathable linen or cotton clothing in light colours to help mitigate the heat. And don’t play games with the sun: wide-brim hats, SPF 30+ (or higher), sunnies and regular sunscreen top-ups are your non-negotiables.

If you’re heading out in the afternoon, be ready for anything—a compact umbrella or lightweight waterproof jacket could save your day when there are surprise showers. Spending the whole day out and about? A reusable water bottle is a must for staying hydrated between swims, coffees or beach breaks.

Planning Tips

  • Morning = activity time: get in your beach swim, seaside stroll or brunch before midday.

  • Midday to afternoon = shade time: seek out cafes, restaurants or bars once the UV peaks and surprise showers hit.

  • Evening = magic hour: sunset and night are prime times for cocktails and coastal views.

Stay ahead of any summer curveballs by keeping BoM’s seven-day forecast on standby. And once you're set for the heat, dive into everything happening on the Gold Coast right here.
