Travelling solo has its perks. You get the window seat both ways, no one steals your snacks and you can eat whatever (and whenever) you like without consulting a second stomach. But why wait until you’re in the air for your holiday to begin?

Airports around the world are becoming dining destinations in their own right, from Michelin-starred ramen at Singapore Changi to Tokyo Haneda’s restaurant alley. And right in our own backyard, Brisbane Airport’s domestic terminal offers award-winning cafes, chef-led dining and plenty of slick bars to sink a beer before take-off.

From Bellissimo to chef residencies, these are the Brisbane Airport spots worth arriving early for, plus a few tips for making your solo pre-flight pit stop a little more enjoyable.

The Best Solo Traveller Bites At Brisbane Airport’s Domestic Terminal

The Independent

Near Gate 41

Hand grabbing chickenNot your average airport diner, The Independent is our go-to for kicking off a solo trip with a proper meal and a runway view. The menu champions produce from local, independent suppliers (hence the name), while a rotating roster of chef residencies keeps things interesting. There’s breakfast for the early birds (yes, avo on toast is a staple) and an all-day menu running until 9pm.

Our picks: Treat yourself to pan-fried salmon with a side of spice-fried cauliflower popcorn and a chilli gin margarita.

Local

Near Gate 41

Located in the Virgin Pier, Local is your little slice of the Sunshine State. Inspired by a Queensland beer garden, this light-filled, 360-degree cafe is centred around a lush, native fig. Add strings of fairy lights, a sand-tiled bar and plenty of seating, and you’ve got a calm space to unwind before you board.

The all-day modern Australian menu spans seasonal seafood such as Moreton Bay bugs, burgers, freshly made sandwiches and vibrant salads. There’s also a solid drinks list covering local and international beers, wines and spirits, including Green Beacon Brewing and Balter, so you can ease into holiday mode with a pre-flight tipple.

Our picks: Start with the arancini balls and finish with the loaded burger (you’ll thank us later).

Bellissimo

Near Gate 40

Hand scooping bowlBellissimo takes the sting out of an early departure. The Brisbane-born coffee roaster brings its award-winning beans to the airport, meaning you can start your trip with the good stuff.

And coffee isn’t the only reason to pull up a seat. You’ll also find gourmet pizza, light bites, local beers and wines, plus a signature Bellissimo espresso martini and a line-up of hyper-local cocktails. Open from 5am to 9:30pm daily, it’s an easy solo pre-flight ritual when you’re flying out at the crack of dawn.

Our picks: We recommend the chilli scrambled eggs with Cholula sauce, crispy shallot and English muffins or the hearty Bellissimo breakfast.

The Lord Lamington

Near Gate 26

Smack bang in the middle of the Central Terminal satellite is The Lord Lamington, a cafe-meets-bar with a distinctly Queensland aesthetic. The name pays homage to Queensland’s first Governor, Lord Lamington, who is said to have created the iconic Aussie cake—so naturally, you’ll find their own spin in the cabinet with a moreish Nutella and baklava flavour.

Beyond the coconut-dusted sponge, there’s an all-day menu covering breakfast classics, pulled pork burgers, battered fish and chips and loaded pizzas. The local love doesn’t stop there, with produce sourced from around the region, including beer from Burleigh, cheese from the Sunshine Coast and muesli from the Tweed Valley. Don’t miss the cocktail list; an Aperol spritz is the perfect way to celebrate the start of an epic solo sojourn.

Our pick: We can’t go past the generous chicken parmigiana; the chicken is cut and crumbed in-house daily.

The Aviary

Near Gate 22

Hand scooping tacos and wineA little birdie told us The Aviary is one of the best spots to dine in at Brisbane Airport. The design-savvy space is all peach and sage, with warm timber, brass accents and plenty of greenery making it feel a world away from the tarmac.

Breakfast runs until 11am with mushroom stacks and eggs your way, before the menu switches into lunch mode. Expect Mediterranean-inspired fare like marinated chicken pita, creamy orzo and Lebanese fattoush dressed with plenty of zesty sumac. Queensland produce gets top billing, with sauces and spice mixes made in-house.

There’s also a creative cocktail list that goes well beyond your standard airport spritz, from the pomegranate caipiroska to strawberry paloma. Whether you’re killing time between flights or just starting your solo holiday, The Aviary is a pretty good place to press pause before take-off.

Our picks: The chicken patatas is a fail-safe pick-me-up, with harissa or Mediterranean-marinated chicken paired with smashed baby chats and grilled broccolini on a pumpkin base. Wash it down with a watermelon and mint margarita.
