The Gold Coast is no stranger to Mexican restaurants, thanks to its ideal margarita-sipping climate and our seemingly insatiable desire for tacos. But one thing we haven’t seen before? A creekside Mexican taqueria with arguably the Gold Coast’s largest agave spirits list.
Enter Tommy’s Taco Bar—the vibrant, tequila-wielding little brother of Tommy’s Italian. Taking over the creekside spot formerly home to Little Tommy’s, this new pop-up taqueria and bar is all about ‘spicing things up’—literally and figuratively—by bringing affordable and authentic Mexican to Currumbin.

Co-owners Tom Torchut and Ronnie Tarabay, the masterminds behind Currumbin’s beloved Tommy’s Italian, were inspired to test their mettle on a new Mexican venture, with a focus on old-school Mexican fare done well—plus an impressive lineup of Mezcal, of course.

The first thing you’ll notice about the pint-sized Tommy’s Taco Bar is the bright red facade, standing out like a beacon to Mexican-loving patrons. Oh, and the large ‘tequila’ sign above the doorway—an immediate sign that this venue has its priorities right.
Outside, clusters of tables and cacti dot the pavement, while inside, nostalgic Mexican artwork lines a wall and an eye-catching red-tiled counter draws your attention to the very well-stocked bar.

Speaking of drinks, let’s get down to business. Tommy’s Taco Bar is serious about agave spirits, boasting over 50 artisanal agave spirits—undoubtedly one of the most extensive collections on the Gold Coast. With a menu dedicated solely to tequila and Mezcal, the high-quality spirits are made for sipping and are served with a fresh verdita or sangrita chaser. Or, if you’re in the mood, no judgement if you opt for shots.

Naturally, margaritas take centre stage on the cocktail menu and our personal favourites are the 3 Chillies margarita—with just the right amount of spice—and the Naranja with orange-infused Arette Blanco, orange oil syrup and lime.
Don’t leave without trying the Mezcal negroni and the Mezcal Paloma which will keep you coming back for more. And if cocktails aren’t your thing, you’ll still find plenty to love with beers, vino and non-alcoholic beverages.

While Tommy’s Taco Bar is a tequila and Mezcal bar at its heart, you’d be remiss to visit without digging into the eclectic Mexican-inspired menu. Crafted by Tommy’s Executive Chef, Frankie, the casual menu has been designed with sharing and affordability at its heart—so yes, you can order a few rounds of tacos and keep ‘em coming.

While casual, the menu offers elevated takes on Mexican favourites, from the handcrafted cheese made specially for Tommy’s to the extensively slow-cooked meats. It is a walk-in only venue, but tables rotate frequently so don’t expect to be waiting for long.
Smart small with delights like the ceviche tostada with pico de gallo, jalapeno sourdough focaccia with smoked Scamorza cheese and the beef tartare tostada with red pepper, spring onion and plenty of citrusy lime.

On the mains front, you’ll be hard pressed to choose between the loaded nachos, the classic tacos—with flavours such as slow-cooked pork and slow-cooked short ribs and oxtail—and the much-loved quesabirrias with braised beef consommé dipping sauce.
Our favourites? We can’t go past the birria beef with oxtail, short ribs, Oaxaca cheese, three chillies and coriander and the mushroom quesabirria with chipotle, Oaxaca cheese and coriander.

As hard as it may be, try to save room for the churros with coconut dulce de leche and the traditional caramel custard flan. And if you weren’t already convinced, you’ll score $5 tacos every Taco Tuesday—what are you waiting for?
