If there’s one thing the Gold Coast loves, it’s hidden bars—the heat of a new venue is directly related to how hard it is to find. Entry via a back door alley? 10 points. A secret password required for entry? Getting warmer. An alleyway speakeasy nestled upstairs next to a tattoo parlour, on the site of a former massage parlour? Nailed it.
Happy Endings is Broadbeach’s new Japanese-inspired speakeasy hiding unsuspectingly above bustling laneway bar and sister venue, Fig + Frankie’s. The upstairs space was previously the site of a massage parlour, before being transformed into the aptly named Happy Endings—a cheeky nod to its former life.
Follow the sound of tunes down the alleyway, venture upstairs, turn left past the tattoo parlour and you’ll find the intimate space pumping with swathes of eager bargoers. The main feature is the expansive bar, illuminated by backdrop lighting, and stocking an impressive range of Japanese spirits. Choose between bar, booth or table seating and soak up the carefully curated details. Japanese signage, warm wood tones and hanging lights add to the cosy atmosphere.
While specialising in cocktails, Happy Endings also boasts a late night snacks menu so you certainly won’t go hungry. Start off with small Japanese-inspired nibbles like kimchi and cheese taiyaki, yakitori and sashimi, before moving onto the larger stars. The wagyu tataki, soba noodles and Korean cauliflower are all home runs, with ball-out-of-the-park flavours.
Now of course, what you’ve been waiting for. The drinks. The concise ten-piece cocktail menu is inventive, colourful and damn delicious. Our top picks were the Wohmango! With vanilla-infused gin, mango oleo, lime and thai basil and the Shibuya Crossing, which muddles sake, blueberry sour reduction, yuzu and egg white. Make sure you’ve booked an Uber home because these bevvies are seriously boozy. If you’re not a cocktail drinker, you’re also covered with a range of wines, Japanese beer, soju and sake.
Consider this your sign to pull up a chair at Broadbeach’s slick new Japanese bar and thank us later.
