The Verdict
Nestled on the Gold Coast Highway, next to Little Maisy and few steps away from Hachi, is Suga, a new plantation-style rum bar that is the perfect anecdote to a long winter’s night.
While the star of the show here has to be their incredible cocktails and impressive spirit collection, we need to take a moment to appreciate Suga’s achingly cool fit-out. The intimate space has been carefully renovated, oozing a sleek speakeasy vibe that transports you to the rum bars of New Orleans.
The curated cocktail list includes eclectic cocktails like the Doctor Bird, a refreshing concoction of Teelings, Campari, pineapple, lime and jerk bitters. But if you only order one, it has to be their signature Shiny-Eye Zombie. Made with a heady mix of 23rd St Brandy, Plantation Overproof, Coruba, Grapefruit, Pineapple, Falernum and Absinth. The tasty tipple is topped with pineapple leaves and passionfruit before being set alight. Drink with a show? We think so. Beer lovers will certainly appreciate the exciting mix of local brews from Black Hops, Balter, Burleigh Brewing, Stone & Wood and Currumbin Valley Brewing.
