Room for a Pony

Elizabeth Street, North Hobart

More than Room for a Pony, this spot has room for the kids. There’s a great outdoor space for them to chill out, as well as the spacious cafe-style dining within. In the morning, you’ll find brekkie classics like eggs benedict and granola as well as unique additions like okonomiyaki (savoury Japanese pancake) and huevos rancheros. Pizza is the main event for lunch and dinner, with classics like formaggio and pepperoni alongside ‘Fun Guy’ with local mushrooms and the vego ‘Bob Brown’. Add on some garlic cheese bites or shoestring fries, and there’s a lot for kids to get excited about here, even before you hit the gelato. And for the grownups, a tight but fun little wine list and local beers.

Local Pizza

Berridale and Bellerive

It’s easy to see why Local Pizza has been a Hobart fave for a decade: chewy, stretchy woodfired pizza in a no-frills setting with outdoor tables for sunny weather. The pizza menu covers all the bases, from a crowd-pleasing margherita to a spicy Kevin Bacon, a Tutti Carne for meat-lovers, the garlic-based Spud Lyf and the Porkipine, their riff on a Hawaiian. Best of all, if you have dietaries, they have gluten free bases and dairy-free/vegan cheese. Pair your pie with beer and wine for you, soft drinks for them. Add on some popcorn chicken or prosciutto croquettes, maybe a caramel cookie sundae to share with the kids, and that’s a rich and full meal for the whole gang.

Moorilla Wine Bar & The Lawns

Mona, Berriedale

One of Hobart’s best family friendly spots, the Moorilla Wine Bar sits beside the Lawns, just outside Mona’s gallery. The stylish cafe-restaurant and breezy outdoor patio is open for lunch daily. A seasonal menu spans from shares like ‘Gods Plate’ of Middle Eastern inspired dips, salads and pita to Tassie wallaby burritos, Ploughman’s rolls and French onion dip with crusty baguette. The Lawns has a weekly grill popup from Heavy Metal Kitchen Thursday to Monday, with regular free live music. You can appreciate the wine and culture, the kids can appreciate the wide open grassy area for running around. Everybody wins.

Rude Boy

Elizabeth Street, Hobart

An award-winning cocktail bar that lets you bring the kids? Absolutely. Rude Boy takes the seasonality of Hobart’s approach to cuisine and puts it in the glass, with a weekly changing daiquiri, spritz happy hours and house-made non alcs. When it comes to the kids, tables outside on the footpath are ideal for a bit of fresh air, or the back area beyond the main bar is a bit less busy (and right near the pram-friendly bathroom). For eats, fried chicken is the star, with your choice of cut, seasoning and sauce. All fried chicken is naturally gluten free, and they have vegan and vego options, plus small appetites might appreciate small plates like corn ribs, popcorn chicken, fried mushrooms and haloumi bites.

Westside Laundry

Goulburn Street, Hobart

Tucked into an old laundromat, Westside Laundry manages to be both a hip wine-diner and a family friendly spot. 7 days a week it serves breakfast and lunch, with dinners from Thursday to Saturday. No high chairs, but the bigger kids will love the diner-style setting. They can tuck into a grilled cheese sandwich while you enjoy a fresh pasta or croquettes, or you could share a plate of decadent fried chicken and waffles. Top it off with a sweet treat like a slice of cheesecake, and everyone’s happy.

Mures

Franklin Wharf, Hobart

While the Upper Deck is more of an elevated affair, the Lower Deck has all the high quality seafood in a relaxed, kid-friendly setting. The bistro offers a quintessential Tassie seafood experience, with fish fresh from their own boat for ‘wild’ fish and chips, as well as Tasmanian scallops, squid and oysters and southern rock lobster. Even vegetarians can find a bite in the pizzas, burgers and salads. A full kids’ menu gives them a little taste of the sea, as well as cheese pizza and chicken nuggets. It’s top-notch cuisine in a casual setting with unbeatable waterfront views. What more could the family want?

Da Angelo Ristorante

Battery Point

A Hobart favourite since 1994, and for good reason. It’s family run, family recipes and a family atmosphere. Da Angelo shares homestyle cuisine in a cosy setting, with food even the picky eaters will love: garlic bread, pizza, pasta and gelati. For parents, and the more mature little eaters, you’ve got Italian staples like scaloppine and cotoletta, house-made risottos, salumi and more, with a boozy, buzzy tiramisu to finish (maybe just for you). If the kids are antsy, you can also get a takeaway pizza instead and head to the nearby Battery Point ‘pirate park’ for a play.

Urban Greek

Murray Street, Hobart

Let the kids explore Cretan dining. Urban Greek is a bustling family restaurant with a welcome as warm as its fresh pita bread. Greek mythology murals line the walls of a space filled with light, life and chatter, with live Greek music every Sunday. Start with some dips and hot saganaki cheese (fried cheese? Always a kid-pleaser), maybe mousaka and mixed grill to share. Or they can order straight from the kids’ menu, with traditional specialties like soutzoukakia (Greek meatballs) and gemista, stuffed oven-baked tomatoes and vine leaves, all served with pita bread and a choice of side. Make sure they save space for a baklava gelato sandwich.

Kosaten

Battery Point

Sushi delivered by conveyor belt? What kid wouldn’t love that! Not to mention the fun of tapping your order into the screen in your private booth. Kosaten is a relaxed, casual spot with more than enough on the menu to keep everyone happy. Sushi, sashimi, nigiri, Japanese fried chicken, salads, miso and more mean you can keep them interested with little bites. The bento boxes are a popular lunchtime feed for something more substantial. It’s all fresh, simple and flavourful, while also being a fun day out along Salamanca.

Pubs & Breweries

Cascade Brewery Bar

Cascade Road, South Hobart

Open from 11am every day, Cascade’s famous bar does what a pub does best: cold beer, casual dining, sprawling outdoor beer garden and regular live music and specials. Sit on the lawns, the patio, in the bar or the dining rooms. Kids can tuck into a junior-sized chicken parmi, tenders, a cheeseburger or some fried squid. Grownups can gravitate towards bougie pub grub like fish and chips, stout-braised brisket, sticky pork belly bites and caesar salad. Enjoy live music and a lively atmosphere. They’re pouring the whole Cascade range plus other popular local brews and tinnies, with Tassie wines and spirits. While the brewery tour is grownups only, the whole gang can join in the daily all-ages historic tour and make a fun day of it.

Preachers

Knopwood Street, Hobart

Fun for grownups and kids alike, this converted heritage-listed cottage is now the home of great craft beers in Hobart. Preachers is open 7 days from 12 til late, with a warren of cosy indoor areas to lounge and dine, plus a spacious beer garden with warming fires in winter. And who needs a playground when you’ve got a vintage Metro bus out back to clamber around in? They’re slinging intriguing brews and classic American-style eats like burgers, chicken wings and loaded fries, with vegan options and regular specials.

Mountain Culture

Murray Street, Hobart

Born in the Blue Mountains, perfectly at home in Hobart, Mountain Culture’s taproom is a vibrant warehouse temple to worship great Aussie beer. Kids meals like chicken parmi or mac ‘n’ cheese all come with a side of chips and juice and ice cream (two courses? Luxurious). For the adults, it’s pulled pork shoulder burgers, fried chicken sandwiches, parmis, schitzel and wings by the half kilo or kilo with your choice of coating and dipping sauce - basically, exactly the food you want when you’re downing a freshly poured brew (or their epic special release tinnies). They’re also pooch friendly, so you can bring every member of the family!

New Sydney Hotel

Bathurst Street, Hobart

One of Hobart's iconic pubs, the New Sydney Hotel is Irish to its very bones. Dark wood panelling and exposed brick walls are hung with Gaelic road signs, flags and memorabilia, with a crackling fireplace, cold Guinness and a renowned spice bag. There’s a dedicated dining area or you can hang out in the covered laneway. The menu is good, solid pub food, from house-made soda bread to bangers and mash, curry, a lamb spin on a dagwood dog and a traditional Sunday Roast. The “For the wee ones” menu offers fish and chips, schnitzel and parmi. Then it’s ice cream sundae for them, chocolate and Guinness cake for you. Expect live music, DJs and the occasional spot of Irish dancing.

Albert Brewery

Moonah

For you, beer. For kids, a big open space with picnic tables, a play area and games to keep them entertained. Albert Brewery is proudly lager-forward, with a German-influenced pub-style Taproom menu to match. You’ll find pork schnitzel, bratwurst and hotdogs, with flatbreads to share and kiddie meals like hotdog and chips. Stop by for live music on weekends, happy hour and food specials throughout the week, and bring the dogs, too: pooches are very welcome.

Deep South Brewing Co.

Argyle Street, North Hobart

A local haunt, favoured especially for their legendary pizzas, Deep South’s taproom matches cool warehouse vibes with a genuinely welcoming feel. With a host of dietary-friendly options and adjustments, it’s also easy to feed the family. Kids may gravitate towards woodfired garlic bread, fried chicken and loaded focaccias, but will probably love the lineup of fresh, hot pizzas, like the potato-heavy Idaho, the Big Mike stacked with meats and BBQ sauce and classics like Capricciosa and Margherita. Aside from a great selection of American-and-Euro style beers on tap, there’s tinnies in the fridge along with wines and non alcs, with weekly specials and live entertainment.

Manky Sally’s

Salamanca Place

Think, fun dive pub with a swish fitout. Manky Sally's is Moo Brew’s official taproom, with ample dining space inside and out the front along Salamanca Place. All the brews are on tap, plus Notto Blotto non alc, local wine and cocktails (the margarita’s especially popular). When it comes to cuisine, it's not your average brewpub fare, with Asian fusion twists like salt and pepper chips with Sichuan seasoning, sesame prawn toast and fried lemongrass squid. Even the burgers are something special, with a wallaby cheeseburger and banh mi burger on offer, plus vego options.

Cafes

Tidal

Seven Mile Beach

Tidal’s one of those hidden gems, a beautifully situated little container near Seven Mile Beach that balances well-crafted specialty coffees with a chilled-out space. They’re serving Market Lane coffee, ceremonial grade matcha, sticky chai and seasonal drinks like coffee spritzes in summer. For the kids, babychinos with marshmallows warm them up on cool days, while real fruit low sugar Pure Pops can help beat the summer heat. If they can’t manage the filling egg and bacon roll on their own, they can munch away at big choc chunk cookies and pull apart flaky Pigeon Whole Bakery croissants. While the inside space is small, Tidal has kid-and-dog-friendly outside tables and a lawn for running about with some games to play. This is your pit stop before or after the beach walk, and it’ll quickly become a ritual.

Brine

Lauderdale

Minimalist and filled with natural light, every inch of Brine is warm and wholesome. The simple menu features local produce from farmer friends and herbs and greens from their garden. Dishes are nourishing and joyful from breakfast pasta with udon, egg yolk and speck to a vibrant snacky Brine plate of sea salt focaccia, pickles and preserves, cheese and cured meats. Kids love the house crumpets with honey butter and dippy eggs with focaccia, but the Happy Meal here is for grownups: chips, fried olives and a dirty martini. Outdoor tables are perfect if you have a pooch, and if the weather’s fine, grab a strawberry matcha to go and head to the beach for a walk.

Machine Laundry Cafe

Salamanca Square, Hobart

Machine Laundry Cafe is hard to miss. Bright colours and retro neon signage are echoed by vibrant flavours in a menu of brunch staples, like sweet ricotta hotcakes or savoury pancakes, eggs benny, mushrooms on toast and a warming porridge. Most dishes have a “small serves” option that's ideal for little tummies, and sandwiches and toasties are big enough to share. Don't skip the cake cabinet and house-made banana bread, either. If the kids need to stretch their legs, they can play around Salamanca Square. Plus you really can do your laundry here. Convenient.

Marla Singer

Bellerive

Marla Singer is a cafe by day, wine bar by night, with ample space to wheel a pram or seat the kids in a booth. It’s a varied brunch menu where fresh, seasonal produce is the star. Enjoy dishes like house-made crumpets, either sweet or savoury (a cheese and Vegemite twist), fluffy scrambled eggs, hearty miso baked beans, their signature manchego cheeseburger and a seasonal pasta like autumnal pumpkin tortellini. All the bread, pickles and preserves are housemade, as are the sweet treats on the bench, from crullers to cakes and cookies. Sip on specialty coffee, matcha, hot choc or seasonal sodas, with beer, vino and cocktails available all day.

Jackman and McRoss

Battery Point

A staple of the Hobart scene, Jackman and McRoss is a bakery cafe with old-school rustic charm. The cabinets are bursting with freshly baked sweets, like croissants and cakes, Aussie biscuits like iced vovos, monte carlos and anzacs, fruit tarts, eclairs, lamingtons and a very bougie vanilla slice. For savoury eats, you have brunchy dishes like mushroom bruschetta, sandwiches and salmon bagels. But you can’t go past their famous hot pies, whether it’s a standard beef filling or something more unique like wallaby, rabbit and the famous scallop pie. There’s more than enough choice for everyone, and enough space to sit in, so chill out with the kids and a coffee and watch the world go by.
