Because when your pizza is this good, you don’t need any other name. Pizzeria is squirreled away inside In The Hanging Garden, slinging hand-stretched, puffy-crust artisan pizzas. As well as your classic margherita, you can tuck into a hot Calabrese with nduja and spicy salami, earthy Funghi e Tartufo with mixed mushrooms and truffle oil, the cheeseless Bianca All’aglio with EVOO, garlic and rosemary, Quattro Salumi Misti (basically your bougiest meat-lovers pizza) and more. Can’t fit a full pie? Opt for one of their ‘mini pizze’. Gluten free? They’ve got you covered too.

The Metz

217 Sandy Bay Road

With the swish modern refurb a few years back came a hot new pizza menu, and the Metz is now known for its seriously solid slice game. Fermented dough and chewy, blistered crusts play host to a tight selection of toppings, starting simple with Cheesy Garlic (exactly what it sounds like), the signature Metz Bread with fior di latte, pesto oil and tomato and classics like Ham & Pineapple and A.O.C. (anchovies, olives, capers). You’ll also find decidedly nontraditional toppings like sweet chilli chicken or pulled lamb shoulder with herb roasted potatoes, spinach and spiced yogurt dressing. Best of all, the pizzas are half price Monday and Tuesday from 5pm.

Self-described as a ‘family-owned cafe’, humility is woven into Smolt Kitchen’s DNA, which is exactly what you want from a pizza place. After all, humble ingredients of flour, water, tomato and cheese prove that oftentimes, simple is best. The technicoloured fitout is a lot of fun, but the burnished bubbling pizza crusts at Smolt aren’t messing around.

Unassumingly named, Local Pizza up in Berriedale is that rare junction where tradition meets mad scientist. Truly excellent sourdough crust transforms into stoner-style pies like the Dude Ranch–popcorn chicken, roast capsicum, pancetta, barbecue sauce, smoked paprika ranch swirls and spring onion (keep an eye on socials for other bonkers specials). 24 hours in the making, the slow-ferment dough is blasted in a wood-fire oven and devoured in moments.
