Sip On Aotearoa’s Best Gins This Summer With Winning Picks From Gin-Lovers

The 2025 New Zealand Gin Competition made their debut last month with almost 100 entries from across the motu, with Matakana Gin Co. taking out the overall winning title with their flagship Matakana Gin. Unlike traditional spirits awards, the New Zealand Gin Competition is blind-tasted and judged by gin-loving consumers (rather than expert and professional judges) to get a sense of what everyday consumers like. Category winners covered classic, contemporary, flavoured, navy, gin liqueur and light styles, plus a large number of gold, silver, and bronze medals were awarded based on aroma, flavour, balance and overall quality. Jump on their website for all the winners.

This Bakery Has Been Given A Fresh New Look With A Side Of Chook

After eight years of slinging their signature sourdough (and for the sweet toothed, their hazelnut pain au chocolat), Daily Bread have moved the bakery from their O.G. Point Chev spot to build a proper bakery in New Lynn. Their flagship store on Great North Road is still humming though—they’ve swapped big bread ovens for a rotisserie oven and are now serving hot chook sarnies Wednesdays to Sundays. Think buttered soft rolls with rubbed rotisserie chook, crunchy salad, and a gochujang hot sauce. Add hot chips and fermented pineapple chilli sauce for an extra spicy kick.

Each box is $45 and comes with 2 local cheeses, 2 cured meats of the day, fruit, honeycomb and housemade crackers for two people. Pair it with their whisked-to-order blueberry matcha or an award-winning gelato scoop (we’ve been told there’s a game-changing liquorice gelato) and you’ve got the perfect picnic set-up. Head to their website to make your order for pick-up on the way to the beach.

Cocktail

Ingredients:

60ml grapefruit juice
30ml fresh squeezed lime juice
15ml maple syrup
½ teaspoon non-alcoholic tequila
Pinch of sea salt
100ml Schweppes Classic Soda Water
Salt or Tajin for rim

Method:

Make the rim by pouring a small amount of salt or Tajin on a shallow plate. Run a lime or grapefruit wedge along the outside of the glass and dip the moistened rim into the salt or Tajin and press gently.

Pour the grapefruit juice and lime juice into your shaker. Add the maple syrup, apple cider vinegar and a pinch of sea salt, along with 3-4 cubes of ice. Replace the lid and shake for about 15-20 seconds until the shaker is cold and the ingredients are well combined.
Strain over fresh ice into a tumbler and top with Schweppes Classic Soda Water. Garnish and serve.

Keep sipping through the week here.
