After the endless rounds of turkey, ham, pavlova and berries you need a well-deserved rest.

Stay away from the streams of shoppers and get out of that kitchen this Boxing Day. To make it easy for you, we’ve compiled a list of our favourite cafes, restaurants and bars that'll be open today. Let the feasting continue.

Celebrate Boxing Day by the sea at Takapuna Beach Café. Try their French toast with berries and vanilla cream, or the eggs benedict with a potato rosti and smoked salmon. Feel revitalized with a fresh beetroot, carrot and ginger juice. Takapuna Beach Café will open from 6am until 8pm, and there’s a 15% surcharge.

Odettes Eatery will be welcoming customers on Boxing Day from 8am-3pm. You’ll find Odettes located in the heart of Auckland’s CBD. Tuck into the scrambled eggs with fresh herbs, goat's feta and baba ghanoush or a lentil salad with pomegranate and haloumi. We love the bright and modern décor and we also love that there’s no surcharge.

Get your morning brew the day after Christmas at Ponsonby Road café Dizengoff. Doors will open from 7am until 2pm, and they will be serving food too, including their well-known half-and-half breakfast, with fluffy scrambled eggs and balsamic mushrooms. 15% surcharge.

Soul Bar & Bistro

Soul Bar & Bistro will be open this Boxing Day from 11am until late. Enjoy great food, drinks and vibes—there will be DJs kicking off at 5pm, too. Make sure to book, as there is limited availability. 13% surcharge.

During the time of the year where indulgence is more than encouraged, why not treat yourself once more and live your fanciest life before the year is out at The Sugar Club. Closed for lunch, they’ll be open for dinner, which totally works well after a full day of bargain hunting. Situated on the 53rd floor of the Sky Tower, you’ll get a taste of premium quality eats, provocative cocktails and killer views of our city. 15% surcharge.

Head to Devon on the Wharf with your family this Boxing Day for delicious and fresh Mediterranean fare and scenic harbour views. They’ll be open from breakfast, if you can handle another all-day food fest and are open until the late hours of the night. Devon on the Wharf’s calamari is delicious and we highly recommend you treat yourselves to a bowl this Boxing Day.

Treat yourself and your loved ones to a Boxing Day celebration at Harbourside Ocean Bar Grill. We’re talking white tablecloths, waterfront views, champagne and oysters. The restaurant’s doors will swing open from 1pm and there’s a 15% public holiday surcharge. Score a seat on the outside deck, sit back and relax.

Visit Turkish restaurant Feriza’s on Boxing Day from 11am and dig into dishes such as slow cooked lamb with hummus, tomato salsa and flatbread and chilli prawns with harissa sauce. Don’t leave without trying the loukoumades—golden doughnut balls soaked in honey with chocolate, dulce de leche and ice cream. No surcharge.

If you’re still craving a warm meal after Christmas, Boy & Bird in Ponsonby is for you. Try their free-range rotisserie chicken, gravy and very moreish potato ‘chunkies’. We like that they only use ingredients that are sourced locally. You can head to Boy & Bird from 11am until 9.30pm on 26 December and there’s a 15% surcharge. Look out for their thirst quenching cocktails.

Continue the Christmas celebrations over a pizza and a glass or two of crisp wine at The Conservatory. The restaurant sits right on Wynyard Quarter so you can people watch until your heart’s content. Open on 26 December from 11am, you can bet The Conservatory is going to be busy. 15% surcharge.

Hello Beasty is operating their regular hours of 11am until 11pm this Boxing Day. The cocktail menu is highly creative and they serve Asian fusion cuisine which you can’t go past. The potstickers and baos are a standout and make sure you save room for their karaage chicken.

Bars & Pubs

If you love beach views, Regatta in Takapuna is the spot to be. With an outdoor deck that catches every bit of sun and a view of the Takapuna Beach, Regatta is the go-to destination hub when it comes to day drinking in the summertime. A seafood platter and glass of rosé can go a long way so get ready for an extended session of wining and dining. Open 11.30am until late, and no surcharge on the 26.

Spend the day after Christmas at The Lula Inn and enjoy great music, a relaxed atmosphere, a tasty menu and Auckland’s only on-water deck. Visit for lunch from 12pm, or for dinner and drinks, and you’ll be reminded about all the great things in life.

Keep the Christmas cheer alive at The Glass Goose, which you can visit from 5pm on Boxing Day. Sip on one of their ‘Grammable cocktails on the rooftop bar, and get stuck into a cheese board or their brisket bun with pickles.

Bask in the sunshine this Boxing Day at Parasol and Swing, a rooftop cocktail bar overlooking the Viaduct Harbour in Auckland. There will be no public holiday surcharge, but there will be great music and food—including the salmon ceviche with mango and yuzu and seriously good fried chicken. The cocktails here are not to be missed—our pick is the whistling blackbird, with tequila, blackberry, pineapple and lime. Doors open from 12pm until 1am.

Bring your best friend or a date to Housebar, a stunning art deco venue that’s found on the first floor of Auckland’s Hotel DeBrett. This coming Boxing Day they will be open from 12pm until 10pm and there’s no surcharge. Graze on their charcuterie board with a fine New Zealand drop and keep the good times rolling.
