7 Reasons You Need To Book A Hawke’s Bay Winter Getaway

By Jessica Ellis

18th May 2022

If you think winter is a time for hibernation, think again. A cosy getaway is just an excuse to do more of the things you love; rug up by the fireplace, eat your way around town or discover serene spots in the off season.

Hawke's Bay, New Zealand's tastiest destination, ticks all the boxes. You'll find a dedicated food and wine festival, a slew of vineyard events, new eateries and dreamy outdoor destinations. Here's everything you should add to the itinerary for an unforgettable winter escape in Hawke's Bay.

Winter Food And Wine Classic

If you're a foodie at heart, Hawke's Bay is the place to be this June. Their famous food festival, the Food And Wine Classic, is returning—going down from Friday, June 3 to Sunday, June 26. This winter's showdown boasts more than 40 delicious events to devour, including an all-new tasty film festival, workshops, masterclasses and one-off foodie pop-ups. From gooey fondue sessions to dessert degustations and boozy wine-filled evenings, you might just need to hunker down in Hawke's Bay for all of June.

Take To The Tasty Trails

There are few places more delicious to cycle through than Hawke's Bay. The gentle landscape makes your ride easy as pie, while the tasty stops are the only incentive you need to keep the wheels turning. It's no surprise you'll find an abundance of world-class wineries, but don't underestimate the charming art deco buildings, seaside views and local craft stores along the way. This route is divided into four legs, making for the perfect three to four-day excursion or a breezy day trip.

Sip Your Way Around The Region

Whether your vice is a drop of vino or an expertly-crafted cocktail, the Bay dishes up both in spades. While a day hopping around wineries is a must, one stop-off not to be missed is the TOM Experience at Church Road's cellar door. This two-hour affair takes place in the vineyard's underground museum, where you'll enjoy an expert tasting session of recent and vintage TOM drops. If aperitivo hour is more your scene, the new kid on the cocktail block, Teresa, is sure to satisfy. Inspired by local produce, their menu features seasonal takes on old faves like the negroni.

Book Into A Blissful Retreat

Hawke's Bay has no shortage of dreamy abodes to shack up in this winter. Whether you're after an off-the-beaten-path experience, stunning vineyard views or indulgent amenities—you'll find it here. Immerse yourself among the vines and views with a night—or several—at renowned vineyards like Black Barn and Craggy Range. As far as glam camping goes, a stay over at Clifton Glamping sets the standard—sweeping vistas over the Maraetotara River and an outdoor bathtub await. Meanwhile, a country escape to Mangarara Eco Lodge feels good in more than one way, with roaring open fireplaces and fresh garden produce ready and waiting.

Glam Up For The Winter Deco Weekend

If there's one thing Napier absolutely nails, it's the ability to turn things up a dial and go all-out on their Art Deco roots. The Winter Art Deco Festival is the perfect example of this, where the town comes to life with fashion experiences, foodie events and plenty of performances. This season's festival takes over the town from Friday, July 15–Sunday, July 17—so grab your glitter, fringe and dancing shoes and book it in.

Sample Seasonal Feasts

If it wasn't already obvious, Hawke's Bay is a haven for food fiends. You'll find plenty of crafty chefs and artisans celebrating the region's seasonal produce, from the bustling grocery stands at the weekend farmer's market to the considered dishes at local eateries. Those making a weekend trip to the Bay should stop by the Sunday farmer's market to pick up a picnic feast—artisan cheese, freshly baked sourdough and sweet treats await. On the flip side, treat yourself to a night out at one of the best restaurants around—scope out something that tickles your tastebuds here.

Stretch Your Legs Among Epic Scenery

A crisp winter's day is the ideal excuse to explore more of our beautiful country. Luckily, Hawke's Bay is home to seriously picture-perfect spots. Whether you're into rugged mountain ranges or scenic coastlines, lace up your sneakers and hit the walking trails. Head to Te Urewera National Park and soak in the native wildlife surrounding Lake Waikareiti, or trek towards Te Mata Peak in Havelock North for panoramic views of the region. Situated nearly 400 metres above sea level, Te Mata's tracks are unbeatable—don't miss a chance to stroll through the immersive Redwoods forest while you're there.

Make magic happen this winter with a trip to Hawke's Bay. Whether it's vibrant festivals, mouth-watering foodie moments or show-stopping nature excursions, your itinerary is covered. Get the deets on what's going on in the Bay this winter over here.
