After taking some time out in 2020, the luxurious, two-hatted Hippopotamus Restaurant and Cocktail Bar is back in full swing and ready to treat you to a fabulously chic culinary experience.

The award-winning restaurant, nestled inside the boutique QT Hotel, has established itself as a firm favourite on the Wellington dining scene, thanks to its fancy pants French fare and extravagant decor that would make Marie Antoinette feel right at home.

With skilful Executive Chef Jiwon Do at the helm, the new menu reprises some of Hippo’s classic, French-inspired dishes alongside tantalising new items, each with a focus on quality, locally-sourced ingredients. And it wouldn’t be Hippo without a bit of theatrics thrown in for good measure. Expect flambéed crêpes and Chateaubriand masterfully carved and seasoned tableside. Dinner and a show; yes please.

If you’re a fan of all things sweet then dig out your stretchy pants, grab your sweet tooth pals and book yourself in for one of Hippo’s famous weekend high teas. These decadent affairs are back with a delightful new twist. Throughout the year, a series of rotating high tea themes will be served up, so you’ll have to try them all, naturally. Themes will be inspired by the seasons, local events and holidays, and each will be dripping with flair in true Hippo style.

Following a sell-out chocolate high tea season, next on the menu is afternoon tea fit for royalty—the Yas Queen Victorian High Tea

Perfect for the queens in your life, this opulent high tea will feature three tiers of French and English delights, sprinkled with sass. Expect dainty macarons and cream-filled Victoria sponge cake, plus posh sausage rolls and Quiche Lorraine, and wash it all down with bottomless cups of tea.

You can indulge in this lavish offering for $41 per person (high tea only) or go all out with high tea and a glass of fizz for $47 per person. Bookings are available until 6 June, so you can treat your faves to a royally good time this Mother’s Day or Queen’s Birthday weekend (hint hint).
