Summer is here and good times are just around the corner, which means it's the perfect time to switch off, uncover new places and rediscover beloved gems on a chilled-out staycation. Sure, hopping on a plane and heading away is great, but why bother when there's so many to explore in your own city.

To help build your itinerary, we’ve teamed up with IHG Hotels & Resorts. They’ve got your accommodation sussed with hotels across New Zealand, including Holiday Inn, InterContinental, and Crowne Plaza. Here's how to spend your first 12-hours on that summer getaway.

8am: Start The Day With Movement

Kick-start your staycation early to make the most of the day, and get the energy flowing with some exercise. Don’t default to a walk around the block, try a new walk or hike instead. For inspo, check out the best walks in Auckland, Wellington, or Christchurch. Alternatively, sign up for an exercise class that takes you out of your comfort zone, or take a plunge at your local pool or beach—those good-feel endorphins will be flowing.

10am: Refuel With Brunch

Chances are you’ve worked up an appetite and your morning coffee is calling your name. Ditch the toast in favour of brunch at a cafe you’ve been meaning to try. No more excuses—today’s the day to try those breakfast waffles for yourself. Lean into the relaxed holiday mode by savouring the experience. Take your book, do the newspaper soduku, and stick around for another coffee or smoothie.

12pm: Treat Yourself To Some Shopping

It wouldn’t be a holiday without a spot of cheeky shopping. Hit up a new precinct or thrift at your favourite vintage stores (we love these ones in Wellington and Christchurch). Treat yourself to a nice something-something so you can relive your staycation long after you’ve checked out. If the budget allows, use it as an excuse to add that coveted piece to your wardrobe or home. Alternatively, it could be something as simple as a beautiful candle, artisan choccies, or a fresh new book.

2pm: Check Into Your Hotel

The part you’ve been waiting for, check into your local hotel and embrace the staycation life. Have a nosey at the amenities and, if you’re feeling peckish, get room service delivered directly to the comfortable bed—well, almost. You’ll feel a million miles from home with the luxe change of scenery—and there'll be no laundry, dishes or chores in sight.

4pm: Seek A Dose Of Culture

Put yourself into the shoes of a tourist—what would they want to check out? Chances are you’re long overdue a visit to your local museum or gallery. Visit one of the staples in your city or find a lesser-known, locally-run spot, such as these must-visit museums in Auckland. Enjoy a slower pace as you soak in new knowledge and find inspiration in the exhibits. Alternatively, catch a film at a local theatre, wander through a garden, or visit an attraction. 7pm: Eat & Drink To Your Heart’s Content

It’s dinner time and you haven’t stepped foot in the kitchen—how good? The holiday season is the perfect time to try your city’s hottest new venue. It can often be easier to nab a table and the vibes are immaculate. We’ve done the hard yards and rounded up the best new restaurants in Auckland and new bars in Welly. Send your taste buds on a culinary journey around the globe and savour a new or favourite cuisine. Pair with refreshing cocktails because when in Rome *insert your city here*.

9pm: Settle In For The Night

Down your final sip and wander back to your hotel to get cosy for the evening. Enjoy a relaxing shower and warm up in a robe. Pro tip: when packing for your staycation, include some DIY spa luxuries such as a body scrub and face mask. Order room service dessert and rewatch an all-time favourite movie. Ah, total bliss.
