Winter is well and truly here, but don't worry it doesn’t mean you have to stay cooped up at home, no siree. In fact, winter means frosty mornings, hot chocolate & marshmallows, and heaps of adventures and weekend getaways in the great outdoors. If that all sounds like a bit of you, check out this unique little spot that we found hidden in the hills of Taupo (you can thank us later).

Picture this, a large dome sat on a hillside with pristine views across farmland, native bush and even lake Taupo—sounds dreamy, right?

Located a short drive from the centre of Taupo, Te Tuhi Dome is your next weekend escape. The dome is a large geodesic structure that looks out across Lake Taupo—literally, views for days. If it’s peace and quiet you’re after then look no further, In fact, your only neighbours are Troy the horse and Bruce and Donald, the farm’s domesticated sheep. You can’t get more off the map than that.

Although if you did want to step back into civilization, then the centre of Taupo is just a 15-minute drive, where you can explore everything the town has to offer... though really you'll want to stay in. Rustle up a delicious meal in the kitchen area, which has a BBQ, a gas stove, kettle and all the kitchen utensils and necessities you could wish for, including tea and coffee.

The inside of the dome at Te TuhiThe inside of the dome is just as stunning as the outside, with a beautiful bedroom and lounging space, where you can enjoy your morning cuppa and gaze out into the horizon. From the bed (the cosiest bed, may we add) to the wooden light shades—you’ll wish you could pack it all up and set it up at home. Every little detail has been thought about, you name it they’ve got it—extra blankets - check, cosy robes - check, battery-powered candles (just to be safe) - check, a woodburn fire - check…

Yep, you read that right, they have a European log fire, hell yes! Whip out your jammies and fluffy socks and cosy on up next to the fire and watch the sunset underneath the rolling hills. Glass of wine in hand, and you’ve got yourself the perfect set up.

Take your bathing to the next level, with an outdoor shower and a luxurious ceramic bath that is truly out of this world.

So what are you waiting for? If you’re after a guaranteed stress-free snooze with impeccable views then Te Tuhi Dome is definitely the place to be.
