We all know COVID has had a huge impact on the arts, so it just warms our cockles to see shows like Mary Poppins come to life in New Zealand and to hear that hit-musical Jersey Boys is set to take centre stage this year. Can it get much better?
Oh yes it can because joining the elite line-up, is the one and only Wicked (cue the screams), that’s right we can’t contain our excitement either.
Jazz hands at the ready as the longest-running musical on Broadway is flying into SkyCity Theatre for a limited season in September 2021. Take a trip along the yellow brick road and prepare to be amazed by an all Kiwi cast as they transport you to Emerald City and back.
North Shore Music Theatre, who previously staged Hairspray at the SkyCity Theatre in 2014, will be returning with a cast of 40 to deliver a show-stopping performance of the much-loved classic.
Wicked tells the story of an unlikely but profound friendship between two girls who first meet as sorcery students at Shiz University: the blonde and very popular Glinda and a misunderstood green girl named Elphaba.
Their extraordinary adventures in Oz will ultimately see them fulfil their destinies as Glinda—The Good, and Elphaba—the Wicked Witch of the West. Watch as their untold story unfolds.
So, if you’re after something entirely ‘wicked’ (see what we did there) then snag your tickets here, and be quick, they’re sure to sell out faster than you can sing ‘defying gravity.’
