The Verdict
When it comes to baked goods, Butter Baby is a bonafide triple threat (and by that, we mean you'll find them on our best cookies, best cinnamon buns, AND best doughnuts lists—pretty impressive, right?).
In fact, chances are you've already encountered their sugar-laden treats at one of their many market appearances over the last two or so years—or perhaps you've ordered some of their goodies online.
Either way, you'll be frothing over the news that this legendary bakery has recently opened its very first store in Westgate. We repeat: you can now get your Butter Baby fix, from a permanent location.
Officially known as Butter Baby HQ, this cute spot (which is easily sniffed out thanks to its cheerful, candy-coloured signage and delivery van parked outside) operates on a takeaway-only basis—slinging all the glorious BB goodness you know and love, alongside coffee (or cold-brew, if that's your jam) courtesy of another local legend, Flight Coffee.
N.B: Customers lacking a sense of self-control around caffeine (erm, us!), are invited to pull up a pew and enjoy their bevvy while they wait for their treats.
The space will also serve as Butter Baby's commercial kitchen—a welcome move for the brand, founded by Matilda Lee (who trained in culinary arts before moving into the hospitality industry) back in June 2021.
During this time, Matilda has gone from making just 20 doughnuts a week in her parents' kitchen for a single pop-up to as many as 450 treats for each of three markets (that's 1200 items in total!).
The new kitchen will allow Matilda and her growing crew of Butter Babes to produce triple the amount of doughies for their market commitments alone, along with those for catering/special occasions and, of course, the store.
The new shop offers a range of exciting flavours centred around the brand's beautifully soft brioche dough, which will rotate fortnightly. Expect a mix of classic doughie creations, along with those paying homage to Matilda's Singaporean heritage (also referenced by their popular ube and pandan kaya cakes, available here by the slice).
Boston cream, Filipino ube, raspberry and cream, and pandan and sago are just some of the drool-worthy options you can expect to get your hands on, along with a line-up of sweet seasonal releases (trust us when we say that come Halloween/Christmas time, these guys understand the assignment).
That's not to overlook their cookies and cinnamon buns, which as we mentioned earlier are each delicious in their own right.
The latter are incomparably soft and come buried beneath a generous layer of vanilla cream cheese frosting—while the former are available in a number of crunchy, chewy and highly addictive iterations including our personal fave, the OG choc chip (if you ever wondered why these guys call themselves Butter Baby, munching through one of these will soon tell you all you need to know).
Both are about the size of your face and will disappear surprisingly fast, despite this fact.
Finally, we're told to keep an eye out for the occasional kuech—a kind of steamed cake hailing from Singapore, that can be served either savoury or sweet (we can already tell they're going to be incredible).
They say that West is best, and when it comes to baked goods—we might just have to agree.
You can still catch Butter Baby at select markets—check out their socials for the latest deets.
