The Verdict
When it comes to all things sweet, we don’t do things by halves at The Urban List. Cakes, doughnuts, slices and everything between… we want it all and we want it now. So, when a café comes along with a cabinet brimming with deliciousness, we ditch the diet and order one of everything.
And that’s exactly what we suggest you do at Mount Eden’s sweet treat haven, Cafe Mont. The tiny but mighty café whips up some of the most decadent treats in town with a delicious all-day menu to boot.
Step inside the suburban pozzy and you’ll find a modern fit-out showcasing a polished concrete floor and homely wooden furnishings. A Spirit Duette espresso machine (aka the best of the best) sits proudly on the counter and a collection of quirky illustrations and typography prints hang from the wall. Long story short, the café is sweet… just like its cakes!
But there’s more to Cafe Mont than sugary, chocolate goodness. Start your day on a tasty note with the likes of chipotle eggs bene, coconut waffles (our fave) or a Caprese-inspired bagel with either smoked salmon or prosciutto. If eggs are your go-to, you’ll love Cafe Mont’s melt-in-your-mouth omelette topped with ham, grilled tomato and shiitake mushroom.
Visit for lunch and you’ll notice Asian influences within the mouth-watering menu. Devour tender chicken thigh flavoured with star anise or opt for deep-fried tofu paired with edamame, fried lotus chips and a drizzle of Ponzu sauce. This incredible vegetarian dish will delight plant-based kiddos and meat-eaters alike.
While we’d happily eat our way through the entire menu, our lunchtime pick has got to be the Korean bulgalbi beef burger. Served with a generous side of fries, the burger is stacked high with kimchi, micro greens and—get this—whipped blue cheese foam. Yep, this bad boy is a top contender for the best burger in Auckland.
Wash your meal down with a caffeinated bevvy or one of Cafe Mont’s vibrant smoothies and brace yourself for dessert. It’s time to eat your way through that overflowing cabinet of goodness. Choose between doughnuts injected with Nutella cream, carrot loaf with lashings of cream cheese and their signature banana hazelnut roll.
If you’ve got dietary requirements, you can have your cake and eat it too. Cafe Mont whips up a range of raw gluten and dairy-free cakes in flavours such as black forest, raspberry coconut and mint chocolate. We’ll have one of each, thanks!
The best part? Cafe Mont is open late four nights of the week, meaning night owls can grab a hot cuppa and slice whenever suits. Whatever time you visit, we can guarantee you’re in for a sweet (pun intended) time!
