The Verdict

Nothing beats a good, honest fry. Fries transform the humble potato into a mouth-watering work of art that comforts the soul and makes the world a better place. If you’re a bit like us and can’t say no to the crispy-yet-fluffy deliciousness, make a beeline for Double Dutch Fries—they serve the best fries in Auckland!

Hailing from Holland 16 years ago, Timothy van der Werff is on a mission to give New Zealanders a taste of patat—Holland’s finest street food. Double Dutch Fries first emerged as a food stall in 2015 and, since then, Tim has been taking over the city—one potato at a time.

You’ll find him cooking his fries to perfection from his food trailer at local festivals and markets and, most recently, Tim has set up a permanent fry joint in the heart of Auckland’s CBD. Yup, that’s right! You can now get Double Dutch Fries all day, erry’day from a shipping container perched on Elliott Street.

So, what makes the fries so damn good? Locally sourced from Pukekohe, the massive Agria potatoes (seriously, these potatoes are huge!) are hand-cut right before your very eyes. They’re then twice-fried in sunflower oil—firstly at a low temperature and secondly at a high temperature (hence the name Double Dutch).

The result? Chips that are delightfully soft on the inside yet crunchy on the outside. The fries are then sprinkled with salt and served in an iconic cone—just like you’d find on the streets on Amsterdam.

As for the toppings, the choice is yours. The traditional patat oorlog (our fave) stars European mayonnaise paired with satay sauce and a garnish of finely chopped red onions. It’s a match made in heaven with the tangy curry-esque sauce being perfectly complimented by the creamy mayo—yum!

Alternatively, the patat rotzooi features tomato sauce alongside mayonnaise. And, if you want to keep things simple, the patat met stars European mayo in all its glory.

Double Dutch Fries’ shipping container is open from 11am until 7pm, seven days a week. It’s the perfect possy to grab lunch on-the-go or to drop in for an easy (but also delish) dinner. Otherwise, should you see Tim’s food trailer at your local market—run, don’t walk—these fries are not to be missed!
