The Verdict
As Gloria's closed its Karangahape Road doors late last year, we were left with quite possibly the worst Christmas present on record. However, we’re back in the good books for 2024 as the sandwich shop has emerged in a brand-spanking new iteration in Auckland's Commercial Bay.
Taking residence on the ground floor amongst the luxury apparel stores and sweet treat shops, Gloria's is back and bigger than ever.
The space welcomes back the sorely missed sandwiches so synonymous with Gloria's with the stuffed-to-the-brim salt beef taking to the sammie stage once more.
Alongside these always-sell-out sammies, Gloria's is also welcoming a few new concepts, including pizza al taglio (think thick, fluffy square slices) and focaccia—a project Chef Nick Landsman has been developing for months. Here the ethos is slow food, fast, using fresh breads and pizza which are slow fermented and digestible, sauces made in-house and using quality ingredients for all.
The top-selling square slices over the first few days have been the potato, guanciale & thyme; the mortadella, pistachio & guindilla pepper; and the Pepperoni, hot honey & ricotta. In the future expect a few more new additions in the form of morning tartines featuring house focaccia, labneh, ora king salmon roe, and chives, and no doubt amazing sausage and egg muffins.
With a deli section loaded with take-home options like cheese, charcuteries and dips, this pumping new spot is sure to become a must-visit spot on the Commercial Bay roster.
