The Verdict

A bustling new eatery—Lobster & Tap—has just opened in the heart of the iconic Auckland Fish Market, specialising in premium Canadian wild caught lobster rolls. Be still our beating hearts. Like the best things in life, your choices here are short and succinct.

Either go for the Classic Lobster Roll—crunchy baguette stuffed to the brim with chilled pieces of lobster—with nary a shell in sight—paired with New England mayo, herbs and spices.

Or, plump for our personal fave, the Hot Buttered Lobster Roll, deliciously slathered with clarified butter to give a crisp outside and ever so soft interior, again loaded with all the lobster you can handle, along with lemon and chives.

Maybe you’d like to try the Crispy Oyster Po Boy: beer battered oysters served with shredded iceberg, pickled jalapeños and a delicious shack sauce.

In terms of sides, the refreshing coleslaw definitely needs to be on your order, as well as the practically compulsory proper chips. If you haven’t had your fill of lobster by now the Lobster Kiwi Dip with crisps is sure to delight, or if you and bread are on a break, you can’t go wrong with the chilled lobster salad. Wash it all down with a refreshing beer or rosé straight from the tap.

One thing’s for sure, you won’t be leaving this spot hungry, but you may be wiping butter from your chin. Sounds like a win-win to us.

It’s a Tuesday night in Auckland city but you’d easily mistake it for the weekend at Sumi. The new izakaya spot by owner-chef Jason Lee (Wakuwaku, Katsu Katsu, Tsuru Tsuru) in City Works Depot is humming.

Wander down the cobblestones of Saint Patrick’s Square and you might happen upon the luxurious first floor of newly-built Hotel Indigo, housed in a restored heritage building. You can enter through the other side too—the Albert Street entrance blending into the concrete jungle as if it was always there (just look for the elegant Bistro Saine font out front).
