The Verdict

Is there anything better than sinking your teeth into some freshly baked goods? We think not. Oh wait, what about vegan baked goods?

An exciting new French patisserie has landed in Grey Lynn and it’s serving up some of the best vegan treats in town. Maison Des Lys is New Zealand’s first plant-based French patisserie on a mission to prove that you don't have to compromise on taste or quality when it comes to Vegan treats—and trust us, once you’ve tasted their pastries, you’ll completely agree.

After moving to New Zealand from Paris in 2015 Drissilla (the brains behind Maison Des Lys) adopted a vegan lifestyle and struggled to find delicious vegan pastries, so she started experimenting and searching for ways to replace animal products in baking—thus, Maison Des Lys was born and our taste buds couldn’t be happier.

You may have tasted these bundles of joy before as they were originally dished out at markets around Auckland but have now found a permanent home on Great North Road.

What was once a barbershop has now been transformed into a sleek, modern space with high ceilings, commercial ovens, and a pastry proofer. Oh, and we can’t forget the glass cabinet, which can only be described as a cabinet of dreams—filled with strawberry tarts, apricot danish, almond hazelnut milk chocolate cruffins and so much more.

The most sought-after pastry at Maison Des Lys is their famous hand-crafted croissants. Think perfectly crisp on the outside yet fluffy and soft on the inside and filled to the brim with gooey goodness.

If like us, you’re a sucker for a sweet treat then fill your face with the strawberry and cream croissant, which with every bite will leave you yearning for more. Croissant number two (because there is no such thing as one croissant) should be the biscoff—filled with caramel cream and topped with a crunchy biscuit.

If your tastebuds are on team savoury, then tuck into the impossible mince and cheese danish—a vegan take on the Kiwi Classic mince on toast. If that doesn’t tickle your fancy then opt for the classic ham and cheese, and don't forget to heat that bad boy up for the ultimate oozy goodness. Wash it all down with a morning brew from the sustainably and ethically sourced coffee powerhouse Eighthirty coffee roasters and you're good to go.

So, if you’re looking for a tasty bite to kickstart your morning, Maison Des Lys will have you 'buttered' up in no time. Bon appétit mes amis.
