The Verdict
If Auckland had an award for the most promising suburb, Royal Oak would be it. The upcoming ‘burb is getting yummier and yummier thanks to an influx of new eateries. One of our favourite (and most delicious) spots is new kid on the block, Oak Eatery.
Hidden away on the upper level of Royal Oak Shopping Mall, the spacious café is an unexpected gem. The light and bright eatery is a breath of fresh air to the mall with its beautiful venue. Decked out with wooden furnishings, white tiling and pendant lighting, it’s a stunning spot for breakfast, lunch and everything in between.
Brought to us by the masterminds behind Café Mont in Mount Eden, Oak Eatery dishes up a menu worth raving about. Featuring something for every taste bud and every craving, the all-day menu has all your brekky faves… and more!
Start your day with creamy mushrooms, eggs bene or a bowl of toasted granola paired with preserved stone fruits and cinnamon coconut cream. If you’ve got a hearty appetite on you, their signature big brekkie will full you riiight up. It comes with all the trimmings including eggs, bacon, bratwurst sausage, sautéed mushies and more.
We can’t go past Oak Eatery’s selection of Best Ugly Bagels—especially the smoked salmon number. The chewy vessel is topped with bocconcini cheese, tomato, basil pesto—what a combo of flavours. If you’re more of a sweet brekkie guy/gal, the coconut pancake is a must-try with fruit, honeycomb and cinnamon-infused cream.
There’s also an abundance of lunch-esque dishes up for grabs with hints of Auckland’s much-loved Asian fusion trend. Dig into pork belly coated with Korean chilli jam (our fave!) or check out the bulgogi beef burger with fried kimchi and bulgogi-flavoured mayo.
As for the little ones, they’re well looked after with a dedicated menu of toasties, pancakes and a mini burger. Better yet, the café has a dedicated play area so they’re kept full and entertained.
But, let’s be honest, no write-up on Oak Eatery would be complete without mentioning their insane cabinet food packed with ALL the treats. Think sugar-dusted doughnuts injected with cream, slices of raw caramel cake and New York cheesecake topped with roasted macadamia and caramel. They’ve got your back with dietary requirements too—many of these goodies are gluten, dairy and refined sugar-free.
Polish things off with a hot drink—they do everything from a flat white and cappuccino to a ginger toddy and hot choccy. There are also iced beverages, an extensive range of teas and refreshing smoothies perfect for the warmer weather.
Thanks to Oak Eatery, it’s safe to say Royal Oak has got it goin’ onnn. Add this one to your must-visit brunch list and get eating!
