The Verdict

When it comes to enjoying simple pleasures, those of the food and/or drink variety rank pretty highly for us Urban Listers. A good coffee. A perfectly baked pastry. Pretty cocktails at a rooftop bar. Which brings us to Portside, the latest addition to a growing number of gravity-defying spots popping up around the city.

That said, this venue isn't exactly new: for the last few years, its been operating as the popular tiki bar, Talulah. However, Foley Hospitality—the group behind Auckland-famous establishments like Soul Bar & Bistro, and Jervois Steak House—has recently taken over the space, giving it a slick, 2025-friendly facelift. Hidden away upstairs at the former Chamberlain residence (now Tyler St Sport, also owned by Foley), gone are the flamingos, fish bowl cocktails, and other relics of the Talulah days; in their place a cosy yet elegant haven where chic drinks are sipped overlooking harbour views.

One thing that hasn't changed is the mastermind behind said drinks—bar manager and mixologist, Hollie Wright. She's taken her many years of experience working at Talulah and channelled them into a stunning, 16-strong list of cocktails, each with their own unique story to tell. Take The Berry Hat, for example, inspired by the memory of a strawberry hat she wore as a child and reimagined here with pink grapefruit, lemon, orgeat and raspberry foam, along with splashes of white rum and Disarrono. Just gorgeous.

Another particularly beautiful drop is the Flowers Amongst The Waterfront. This one takes its name from Hollie's passion for photographing flowers and contains an intoxicating blend of hibiscus, ginger, honey, lemon, elderflower, lavender bitters, whites and vodka, crowned with teeny tiny blooms to really bring the theme together.

And for those who like their drinks a little less feminine, don't miss Hollie's showstopping take on an old fashioned: the Port Fashion. We won't ruin the surprise, but let's just say it involves a smoking gun (the kind used for cocktails, silly!). Wine, beer, spirits, and a short but sweet line-up of mocktails, also curated by Hollie, round out the drinks selection in solid fashion.

As to be expected, the food here is of the same exceptional quality. Graze over sophisticated snacks like chargrilled flatbreads with assorted dips—juicy fried chicken drizzled in soy caramel—and prawn toast served club-sandwich style, with gochujang aioli for dunking. There are also larger plates for more adventurous eaters (we'll take the triple cheese pastrami melt with fries, please and thank you!), along with dessert (one word: churros).

So while you may have fond memories of Talulah (we do too!), we're confident you'll make some fab new ones at its rather swish successor—no fish bowls or flamingos required.
