The Verdict

The hip and industrial Scullery Café on K Road sets itself apart in its conscientious commitment to minimising their environmental impact. The menus are printed on recycled paper, the straws are biodegradable and the idea is to limit the waste to one rubbish bag a week. It’s that kind of environmental consideration that puts Scullery in a league of its own.

The attention to detail is something that transcends the model of the café, and flows over into the food and décor. Little delicate touches create an incredibly warm and welcoming ambiance, and the menu is exquisite, with offerings from wagyu mince on toast to parsnip and gruyere fritters with pickles and goats curd.

Sumi

It’s a Tuesday night in Auckland city but you’d easily mistake it for the weekend at Sumi. The new izakaya spot by owner-chef Jason Lee (Wakuwaku, Katsu Katsu, Tsuru Tsuru) in City Works Depot is humming.

Kinfolk

Funny that the first thing I noticed about Kinfolk had little to do with the actual food—rather, it was the artwork on the back wall depicting three women on lilos, eating pasta. I like this place already, had been my immediate thought.
