The Verdict

Community is queen when it comes to places we love to hang out but it’s not a vibe that’s exactly easy to pull off. You will, however, find it by the gallon (or should we say pint) at Side Hustle, the newest addition to Morningside Precinct.

Satisfyingly, Side Hustle began as a side hustle when friends Tim, Nige and Lou saw the opportunity to expand Morningcidery—Aotearoa’s first bar dedicated to all things cider—into the former digs of Electric Chicken, Bo's Dumplings and Six Barrell Soda.

Described as a French wine cave X Melbourne back alley, the new lane bar has a creative, relaxed atmosphere with vintage wrought iron gates, vibrant mural surrounds, a cosy velveteen corner nook and neon detailing.

Side Hustle joins forces with adjacent culinary gem Phat Philly's, to offer a menu featuring iconic Philly cheese steaks which perfectly complements Side Hustle's impressive array of fusion tapas and sharing plates.

As for the libations, you’ll find the iconic Morningcider Cider, award-winning Strawberry Rosé and hoppy Apple IPA on tap, along with whatever tastebud-tantalising experimental ciders Master Brewer, Tim, has whipped up.

In addition, the fridge is stacked with Yeastie Boys, and other local ciders, beers and wines. Can’t decide? You don’t need to. Opt for a Cider Paddle of five and live the dream with Classic Apple, Peace o’ Pie, Strawberry Rosé, Hot x Bun, and Black.

Also well-worthy of a mention is their bespoke cocktails and, equally, their elegant mocktails made with non-alcoholic botanicals like Lyre’s Pink London Spirit.

Swing by Tuesday to Sunday between 4 and 6pm to snag a beer or cider for $8, or a strawberry marg for $12 a pop.

We can see long, lazy afternoons here, soaking up the summer heat, a drink in hand and a selection of tapas within arm’s reach. And if heaven forbid, we do have to crawl into our inbox, we can think of no better spot to do so—those in need of a space to hash out their own side hustles are welcome. And, just between the two of us, a cheeky tipple is great to get those creative juices flowing.
