The Verdict

If you're looking for a buzzing spot for lunch and dinner in Albany, look no further than Sum Made

Whether you're a table for two or have a big crew, this Albany restaurant has the perfect seating arrangement for you (with the mandatory lazy Susan for larger groups, of course).

This spacious eatery flaunts beautiful floor-to-ceiling windows, letting daylight stream through to its dining areas spread across two storeys.

We're about to spill the tea on Sum Made's yum cha, but if dinner is more your thing, they also have a superb menu specialising in live seafood. Order dishes like Steamed Whole Fish with Fresh Szechuan Peppercorns and Razor Clams in Savoury Black Bean sauce a la carte or get all their greatest hits with a set menu.

Sum Made's lunch menu features the yum cha classics—steamed dumplings, BBQ pork buns and salt and pepper squid—but you'll also find a fresh take on dim sum.

Take the Crispy Red Rice and Fresh Shrimp Roll—believe it or not, this dish was born right here in Auckland. Juicy pieces of shrimp are wrapped in a crunchy fried egg roll and then bundled up with red rice paper. The fascinating combination of crunch, crackle and chewiness is guaranteed to keep you coming back for more.

If you're craving a dish that perfectly balances salty and sweet, the Honey Glazed BBQ Pork Puff Pastries are the way to go. These delectable bites of flaky, buttery pastry are filled with chunks of meaty, tender pork. These are too good to share, so you'll probably want to order more than one for the table.

Char siu has a special place in our hearts (and bellies) and Sum Made's succulent morsels remind us why this dish is a timeless favourite in Cantonese cuisine. Their Secret Recipe Black BBQ Pork melts in your mouth with the secret sauce bringing deep, burnt sugar notes to balance out each bite.

We can't talk about yum cha without mentioning at least one dumpling dish. The Sea Treasure Steamed Dumplings are adorably shaped like fish and also contain an unexpected ingredient—sea cucumber. This marine addition adds an earthiness to the steamed goods, resulting in a savoury, seafood delight.

Make sure you leave room for dessert—there's a fanciful selection of sweets and pastries to cap off the meal. If, at this point, you're feeling the post-yum cha food coma kick in, Sum Made's Energy Shot comes to the rescue. This coffee pudding is made with espresso from Atomic Coffee beans and has a surprisingly light, jiggly texture, meaning it'll perk you up without making you feel like you're bursting at the seams.

Ah durian. This controversial fruit is divisive for its strong, pungent aroma, so for those who aren't put off by its stinky reputation, the Lively Swan Durian Puff is simply charming. The delicate, swan-shaped pastry encases a rich and fruity durian custard. Despite its notoriety, durian tastes better than it smells, and the tropical fruit complements the dessert with its sweet and savoury flavour.

So, if you're ready to swap your usual brunch routine for an enticing array of dim sum delights, Sum Made is the spot to be.
