The Verdict
Boutique brews, bites and an onsite barber—Sweat Shop Brew Kitchen has you covered for all your foodie and furry needs.
Calling the former denim factory on Sale Street home, this gastropub takes its name and style inspiration from the venue’s previous life. Known as ‘the hardest working bar in town’, the Sweat Shop team believe in employing the ultimate craftsmen, from the brewer, to the cocktail maestro and chefs.
Surrounded by the original bare brick walls, the bar and dining area is decked out in industrial fittings, giving us chic warehouse vibes. It’s an eclectic mix of interesting pieces from exposed lighting to denim-covered bar stools. The large brew tanks and signs shouting FRESH BEER prove this place is a craft beer lover’s dream. Stepping out onto Auckland's largest rooftop deck confirms you're at one of the cities best locations. With views for days, enjoy a sundown sip and snack overlooking the hub of the city.
Sporting a mouth-watering selection of American fare, Sweat Shop’s street eats will have you visibly drooling. We’re talking slow-cooked, fall-off-the-bone meat. Our advice? Bring a napkin. The smoked pork ribs slathered in succulent barbecue sauce are enough to make anyone weak at the knees and are paired with potato tots, slaw and McClure’s pickles. We recommend ordering a side of the mac ‘n’ cheese morsels—deep-fried pockets of macaroni and Gouda cheese, dunked in chipotle aioli.
Forget boring health foods, because the ‘Filthy Salad’ is a game-changer—it stars Sweat Shop’s signature fried chicken, avocado, crispy carrot, bacon, egg, and parmesan aioli. If this is considered a salad, we’re all about being healthy. They also offer a selection of street eats like cheeseburgers, fried chicken and pizza, so there’s something for everyone.
Wash it all down with lovingly crafted beer by brewing legend, Paddy Molloy. Take your pick between lager, pale ale and American pale ale or try one of his specialist brews—it’s all about big flavours that pack a punch. If you’re after something on the sweeter end, the cocktail selection is a standout and features non-alcoholic options made with 0.0% artisan spirits. We’ll have one boysenberry mojito, please.
Sweat Shop Brew Kitchen has you sorted with their events and deals as well. Hit up Sweat Shop Live every Friday and Saturday night for some killer jams. For something different, opt for a brewery experience or grab an $8 beer 4–6pm every day. Top of our list goes to their $1 hot dog with any drink every Wednesday, how many can you smash? A total one-stop shop, get the group together for a good night of brews, banter and gigs.

Portside
When it comes to enjoying simple pleasures, those of the food and/or drink variety rank pretty highly for us Urban Listers. A good coffee. A perfectly baked pastry. Pretty cocktails at a rooftop bar. Which brings us to Portside, the latest addition to a growing number of gravity-defying spots popping up around the city.
Tyler St Sport
Tyler St Sport is the cracking new venue from Foley Hospitality aka the group behind several other top Auckland establishments including Soul Bar & Bistro, Andiamo, and Somm Wine Bar & Bistro. Solid credentials, to say the least.
