You can’t call yourself a true Aucklander until you’ve dined in the much-loved Tanuki’s Cave. Literally located under Queen Street, the Japanese yakitori and kushiage bar dishes up some of the best skewers in town.
Located a hop, step and a jump from Q Theatre, The Classic, Basement Theatre and the mighty Civic, it’s the perfect spot to grab a bite to eat before your show starts or for a debrief after it ends.
We love their deep-fried mashed kumara balls coated in almond chips—trust us, it tastes better than it sounds. And don’t leave without trying their gooey deep-fried banana dessert.
Featuring in the recent Guinness ad with Jason Momoa and now also graced by Jason's mate Jack Black who's in town to film the Minecraft movie, we can't say we're surprised that this pumping spot has left an impression on the A-Listers.

Sumi
It’s a Tuesday night in Auckland city but you’d easily mistake it for the weekend at Sumi. The new izakaya spot by owner-chef Jason Lee (Wakuwaku, Katsu Katsu, Tsuru Tsuru) in City Works Depot is humming.
Bistro Saine
Wander down the cobblestones of Saint Patrick’s Square and you might happen upon the luxurious first floor of newly-built Hotel Indigo, housed in a restored heritage building. You can enter through the other side too—the Albert Street entrance blending into the concrete jungle as if it was always there (just look for the elegant Bistro Saine font out front).
