There are only a handful of pubs that stand the tricky test of time and, the legendary Cav just happens to be one of them. Once known as The Cavalier Tavern, this Ponsonby treasure provides a buzzing atmosphere, scrumptious food and ice-cold drinks.

Sitting proud halfway up College Hill, this Auckland institution has an impressive 150 years of history under its belt, so you know they’re doing something right. With a huge deck and sweeping views of the city, this bright, welcoming pub is an unbeatable spot to enjoy a tasty meal and cold bevvie when the sun’s out. And, during the chilly months, you can curl up by the fire or get cosy in one of the many booths.

While we could talk about The Cav’s awesome fit-out all day long, it’s the food that we can’t get enough of. They take classic pub grub and generously sprinkle it with a whole lotta magic, taking the dishes to another level of delicious. Head Chef Eugene and his team follow food trends closely and always find innovative ways to inject them into their offerings.  

Their stellar line-up includes the likes of burgers (the pork katsu is a standout), cray and chips, Southern fried chicken and waffles, spicy duck rendang, a moreish Moroccan cauliflower soup and pulled pork eggs bene…the list goes on and on. Pair that with a selection of craft beers and New Zealand wines and it’s a guaranteed good time.

Thankfully for our waistlines, The Cav understand that dining out doesn’t necessarily equal a cheat meal. From their Auckland-famous naked burrito to spicy pho and lettuce cups, there’s absolutely no guilt in feasting here.

But if you’re not after a sit-down meal, then you can’t go past their bar snacks—The Cav is a strong contender for having the best in Auckland! Gather your crew and demolish the taco board—a selection of eight crispy chicken, Texas pulled pork and battered snapper tacos—all lined up waiting for hungry mouths. Sliders more your jam? Their slider board features TWELVE of these bite-sized delights.

And, if you’re the proud owner of a bunch of sprogs, The Cav will keep them happy with their Feed The Shrimps dishes—spag bol, fish’n’chips and other kid-friendly nosh served in bento boxes. 

So, whether you’re after a boozy lunch spot, place to feed the fam or dinner with the gang, you know where to go…The Cav will be ready and waiting.
