The Verdict

Never have we ever had a toasted sandwich quite like Toasty's.

Because as much as we love a homemade ham and cheese job (we're Kiwis, of course we do!), we're starting to think there's a  better way... one that involves stuffing thick slices of Asian-style bread with juicy bacon, about an inch of perfectly-cooked scrambled egg, and two types of sauce (housemade red, and basil) to the point that said sammie has to be served upright, in a custom-made toastie holder.

In any case, this is what you should expect when you order the Benny—one of seven lip-smacking toasted sandwiches available from this tiny spot, perched one storey up on Quay Street just across from Commercial Bay.

Easily recognised by its bright yellow signage, reminiscent of melted cheese (because homemade or not, cheese is a toastie non-negotiable) and more than likely, a line of hungry customers snaking out the door—Toasty has been making quite a name for itself since its recent opening.

Along with the Benny mentioned above, this cute little kiosk is also dishing up toasted sammies with fillings like bulgogi and truffle (aka the fan favourite Sammy)—salami and cheese (aka the Pizzy)— and spicy chicken and teriyaki (aka the Volcano-Chicky, which can be tailored to your desired level of spice. To date, only a handful of customers have been brave enough to try the hottest option. Will you be next?).

Much of Toasty's deliciousness can be attributed to the bread, which is baked fresh in-house daily in three moreish options—OG (a sweet, milk-style variety popular in Korea and other Asian countries), croaf (a loaf made from croissant dough), and garlic butter.

There's also the matter of free entertainment. Specifically, the culinary pyrotechnics happening behind the counter as the chefs set your sammie and its chosen fillings alight with a handheld blow torch.

Toasties aside, a small but moreish lineup in the cabinet includes some of this spot's most popular sammies in wrap form, garlic bread sticks, and crunchy scones piled high with scallion sour cream. Rumour has it that doughnuts also make the occasional appearance (which you just know would be amazing).

Wash down your chosen treat with one of Toasty's expertly crafted drinks, including filter coffee and some super lush cold options (we like either the coco latte or machocco, flavoured with matcha and chocolate).

With cute vibes, cool staff and most importantly, game-changing toasties, this spot is quite literally the toast of the town.
